Leadership for Change in Teacher Education: Voices of Canadian Deans of Education presents a rich sampling of diverse perspectives on the topic in a unique collection of reflections contributed by Canadian deans of education. Teacher Learning and Leadership asserts that teachers should be put at the center of creating, developing, organizing, implementing, and sharing their own ideas for school change rather than being passive recipients of knowledge from the outside. This book highlights the difficulties that women working as managers and leaders in initial teacher education face. Teacher education is at the forefront of education reforms and yet little is known about the professional lives of those who work within it. Whereas many women are moving into positions of authority in teacher training, some existing women managers are being marginalized within new internally differentiated layers of managerial structures. Yet other female managers, mainly new appointees, seem to endorse the discourses associated with new managerialist practices. Simultaneously some women who manage in teacher training are engaged in a struggle for survival individually and professionally. In the main, men seem to be missing from authority positions and will conclude that, in the current climate, the management of teacher training is ‘no job for a man’.

This book investigates the professional learning needs of teachers beyond initial teacher education, focusing on teachers in complex teaching positions, such as out-of-field teaching practices. This book collates the practitioner stories of university-school partnerships for the renewal of educator preparation (US PREP) teacher preparation programs across the nation, documenting the programs’ efforts to enact scaled transformative practices within their institutions. Examples include the way in which educators engage multiple stakeholders in program improvement, transform the clinical preparation of teacher candidates, develop measures of program success, and create the conditions for transformative change. Each chapter highlights the efforts of one or more of US PREP’s 32 university-based teacher preparation coalition programs. This book advocates for an alternative to the hierarchical positioning of leaders. It proposes to value leadership practices which emerge from collective concerns about learning and the realisation that collegial interactions offer opportunities for rich explorations of pedagogy and new understandings to be developed. The book draws upon illustrative examples from a longitudinal study of early career teachers, entitled “Teachers of Promise: Aspirations and realities”. It explores matters of personal ambition, support from significant others, and barriers to teacher leadership. It shows that these vary from context to context and individual to individual. Examples highlight the ways in which each teacher’s experience has been enabled and constrained by different considerations. In combination, the examples offered demonstrate the need for the teaching profession to be more systematic in identifying and supporting talented teachers who could be the leaders of learning for tomorrow. The book shows that individuals themselves need to have an openness to consider how they might become more effective teachers through their engagement in leadership work. This, it suggests, involves developing a different conception of leadership to counter the prevailing view that leadership is typically positional and defined by its distance from classroom teaching. The more promising portrayal is to link teacher leadership explicitly with learning.

In recent years teacher leadership has undergone one major revolution and is in the process of undergoing another. The first came about as schools turned out to be far too complex for the responsibility of formulating and achieving their goals to be vested entirely in principals and head teachers. As a consequence, the rise of distributed leadership as an alternative model for understanding schools and their functioning is now commonplace. The second major revolution affecting teacher leadership is the rise of the Internet and ICT, and the way these give rise to greater and more flexible opportunities for students to become autonomous learners. Autonomous student learning now occurs in significant new ways and under parameters that are far more expansive than school-based learning. An effective model of teacher leadership thus needs to capture these changes in order to reflect the new realities of student learning and student engagement with their schools.
