This edited book reflects the state of the art in learner corpus and related approaches to Chinese as a second language (CSL). CSL as a field has flourished in the past few decades due to the increasingly important role of the Chinese language at the world stage, yet studies of Chinese as a second language based on learner corpora have been less well developed due to the limited availability of data and lack of theoretical insights. Pedagogical Grammar and Grammar Pedagogy in Chinese as a Second Language is the first book in the field of Chinese as a second language that brings together one overview article and eleven research studies surrounding the key words "grammar" "pedagogy" and "Chinese as a second language." The book is a dedication to the 60th anniversary of the Chinese Language Teachers Association – U.S. The studies included draw on different theoretical frameworks, adopt a range of methodological strategies, and address the questions of how grammatical knowledge should be effectively presented and in what capacity grammar competence could be better developed in and outside classrooms, based on which pedagogical recommendations and implications are advanced. This volume reflects the centrality of the existential construction in current linguistic research and offers studies that both consolidate and challenge established research agendas. It addresses (i) a variety of constructions related to ‘prototypical’ existentials (including the have-possessive construction), and investigates (ii) the relationships between locative, existential, and information structure, (iii) the quantification of the pivot and (iv) the issue of negative existentials. It brings together different and complementary approaches (functional, cognitive, pragmatic, typological, comparative, diachronic, philosophical) based on a wide variety of data sources. This volume explores the implications of Chinese for linguistic theory building and for the field of second language acquisition. Bringing together selected papers from the first International Symposium on Chinese Theoretical and Applied Linguistics, it sheds light upon under-documented topics in a variety of areas within theoretical and applied research. The topics covered here include competing approaches within optimality theory to phonological opacity, formal solutions to puzzles in Shanghainese morphosyntax, and different approaches to polarity items and presentational sentences in Chinese. Cheung, Liu, Moratto, and their contributors examine how corpora can be effectively harnessed to benefit interpreting practice and research in East Asian settings. In comparison to the achievements made in the field of corpus- based translation studies, the use of corpora in interpreting is not comparable in terms of scope, methods, and agenda. One of the predicaments that hampers this line of inquiry is the lack of systematic corpora to document spoken language. This issue is even more pronounced when dealing with East Asian languages such as Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, which are typologically different from European languages. As language plays a pivotal role in interpreting research, the use of corpora in interpreting within East Asian contexts has its own distinct characteristics as well as methodological constraints and concerns. However, it also generates new insights and findings that can significantly advance this research field.
