Learning Language Through Literature In Primary Schools

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This resource book contains a wealth of ideas for primary school teachers of English who wish to use literary texts and techniques in the language classroom. The book offers practical assistance in the form of lesson plans, teaching procedures, sample worksheets and follow-up activities. These have been tried out and reacted to by Hong Kong primary teachers, so that what is presented here is realistic and feasible in local classrooms. The materials will be useful for all practising primary teachers of English as well as for those on teacher education programmes. The aim of the Experiential Dimension of the new Target Oriented Curriculum is to help Hong Kong (primary school) children ‘. . . Develop an ever-improving capability to use English to respond and give expression to real and imaginative experience.’ Activities related to storytelling, rhyme, songs and playlets are used here to help develop reading, listening and speaking skills and to generate written work appropriate for this level. Instead of language routines, drills and practice exercises there is an opportunity for the children to develop confidence in using English through greater personal engagement. The tasks call for the active involvement of all pupils. When children see the words come alive and get up off the page, their crucial first experiences of learning English are likely to be enriching and enjoyable ones.

Cultural Mediation In Language Learning And Teaching

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This project attempts to tackle several challenges: - to experience the variety of different teaching cultures as a source of innovation rather than as an obstacle; - to adopt a pluridisciplinary approach by introducing references taken from the social sciences in order to develop reflection on the role of languages in social cohesion; - to try and provide answers to a question hitherto rarely raised in the didactics of languages and cultures, namely the place of cultural mediation itself. Applied Linguistics And Primary School Teaching

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Modern primary teachers must adapt literacy programmes and ensure efficient learning for all. They must also support children with language and literacy difficulties, children learning English as an additional language and possibly teach a modern foreign language. To do this effectively, they need to understand the applied linguistics research that underpins so many different areas of the language and literacy curriculum. This book illustrates the impact of applied linguistics on curriculum frameworks and pedagogy. It captures the range of applied linguistics knowledge that teachers need, and illustrates how this is framed and is used by policy makers, researchers, teacher educators and the other professions who work with teachers in schools. It considers how to effect professional development that works. It is essential reading for primary teachers but also for speech and language therapists, educational psychologists, learning support teachers and all those doing language or literacy research in the primary classroom.
