This volume of original chapters written by experts in the field offers a snapshot of how historical built spaces, past cultural landscapes, and archaeological distributions are currently being explored through computational social science. This open access book demonstrates the application of simulation modelling and network analysis techniques in the field of Roman studies. It summarizes and discusses the results of a 5-year research project carried out by the editors that aimed to apply spatial dynamical modelling to reconstruct and understand the socio-economic development of the Dutch part of the Roman frontier (limes) zone, in particular the agrarian economy and the related development of settlement patterns and transport networks in the area. The project papers are accompanied by invited chapters presenting case studies and reflections from other parts of the Roman Empire focusing on the themes of subsistence economy, demography, transport and mobility, and socio-economic networks in the Roman period. The book shows the added value of state-of-the-art computer modelling techniques and bridges computational and conventional approaches. Topics that will be of particular interest to archaeologists are the question of (forced) surplus production, the demographic and economic effects of the Roman occupation on the local population, and the structuring of transport networks and settlement patterns. For modellers, issues of sensitivity analysis and validation of modelling results are specifically addressed. This book will appeal to students and researchers working in the computational humanities and social sciences, in particular, archaeology and ancient history.

Il numero 35.1, 2024 di Archeologia e Calcolatori è un volume ricco e articolato che contiene tre sezioni speciali e un gruppo di 15 contributi dedicati all’applicazione delle più attuali tecnologie informatiche nei diversi settori della ricerca archeologica, in cui si nota una crescente attenzione verso il dato visuale e la modellazione virtuale. La prima sezione, curata da G. Gambacurta e F. Bortolami, è dedicata agli Atti del workshop (Venezia 25 settembre 2023) “Necropoli etrusco-italiche: archeologia digitale e paesaggio funerario”, che offrono un interessante focus sul tema della ricostruzione del paesaggio funerario attraverso le nuove tecnologie, presentando alcuni significativi casi di studio. La seconda sezione è curata da V. Fromageot-Laniepce e A.V. Szabados e tratta di “Images antiques et humanités numériques”, tematica particolarmente fertile negli studi della scuola francese. La sezione, in particolare, riferisce i risultati dei seminari ArcheoNum, organizzati dall’equipe CNRS-ArScAn con l’obiettivo di creare uno spazio di dialogo sulle questioni dell’archeologia e del patrimonio culturale digitali. La terza sezione, curata da A. Caravale. P. Moscati e I. Rossi, chiude il volume, pubblicando i primi risultati del lavoro di alcuni gruppi di ricerca impegnati nel Progetto PNRR H2IOSC, che mira a creare un cluster di Infrastrutture di Ricerca nei settori delle Scienze Umane, delle Tecnologie Linguistiche e dei Beni Culturali.

This open-access book surveys how digital technology can contribute effectively to improving our understanding of the past, through a sensory engagement based on the evidence of material culture. In particular, it encourages specialists to consider senses and human agency as important factors in studying ancient space, while recognising the role played by digital tools in enhancing a human-centred form of analysis. Significant advances in archaeological computing, digital methods, and sensory approaches have led archaeologists to rethink strategies and methods for creating narratives of the past. Recent progress in data visualisation and implementation, as well as other nascent digital sensory methods, means that it is now easier to explore and experience ancient space from a multiscalar perspective, from the individual body or single building to the wider landscape. The chapters in Capturing the Senses: Digital Methods for Sensory Archaeologies present innovative methods for representing an embodied experience of ancient space, simulating (but not recreating) ancient behaviours and social interaction. Chapters cover topics including the potentials and pitfalls of visualising, recreating, and re-enacting/experiencing the senses in Virtual Reality environments and also digital reconstructions and auralisations of ancient spaces to study sound sensory perception. Overall, the book demonstrates that multisensory approaches can give a new perspective on how ancient spaces were intended to be used by inhabitants to fulfil a series of purposes including conveying messages and regulating movement. This is an open-access book.

Twenty-five papers from the Institute for Mediterranean Studies in Crete provide a best practice guide for the use of geophysical, geoarchaeological, geochemical and surveying techniques to study ancient landscapes.

Central Asia has been perceived as a landscape of connections, of Silk Roads; an endless plain across which waves of conquerors swiftly rode on horseback. In reality the region is highly fragmented and difficult to traverse, and overcoming these obstacles led to routes becoming associated with epic travel and high-value trade. Put simply, the inhabitants of these lands became experts in the art of travelling the margins. This volume seeks to unravel some of the myths of long-distance roads in Central Asia, using a desert case-study to put forward a new hypothesis for how medieval landscapes were controlled and manipulated.
