IMF economists work closely with member countries on a variety of issues. The International Monetary Fund under Constraint exposes a legal dilemma facing the IMF as it tackles international crisis management. Using the Asian crisis - and more particularly economic and political events in Indonesia - as an example, this volume examines whether the Fund's activities in Asia were legally justified. The results of this analysis lead to the following question: What future role can the IMF play in the international financial architecture? The fundamental recognition in this book is that the issue of what international legal principles are applicable to the operations of the IFIs is an important topic that would benefit from more rigorous study. The 20072010 global financial crisis re-opened the debate on the reform of the international monetary and financial system. This well-argued book demonstrates the strategic role of international economic law (IEL) in ensuring international monetary stability and global financial stability. The practical importance of the subject of 'The External Debt' in contemporary international life goes without saying. On the analytical level, the interest and indeed the difficulty of the subject lies in the need for a multidisciplinary approach, where political, financial and legal aspects are closely linked and require a clear understanding. From the purely legal point of view, the traditional and largely artificial boundaries between private and public law, between private international law and public international law and even, more generally, between municipal and international law are clearly marked here.
