Learning From Data

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Ten years ago Bill Gale of AT&T Bell Laboratories was primary organizer of the first Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Statistics. In the early days of the Workshop series it seemed clear that researchers in AI and statistics had common interests, though with different emphases, goals, and vocabularies. In learning and model selection, for example, a historical goal of AI to build autonomous agents probably contributed to a focus on parameter-free learning systems, which relied little on an external analyst's assumptions about the data. This seemed at odds with statistical strategy, which stemmed from a view that model selection methods were tools to augment, not replace, the abilities of a human analyst. Thus, statisticians have traditionally spent considerably more time exploiting prior information of the environment to model data and exploratory data analysis methods tailored to their assumptions. In statistics, special emphasis is placed on model checking, making extensive use of residual analysis, because all models are 'wrong', but some are better than others. It is increasingly recognized that AI researchers and/or AI programs can exploit the same kind of statistical strategies to good effect. Often AI researchers and statisticians emphasized different aspects of what in retrospect we might now regard as the same overriding tasks.

Learning From The Past

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This collection of essays in honour of Anthony N. S. Lane has two main foci, picking up themes which resonate with some of Lane's most important work. The first broad theme is the reception of the thought of earlier generations of biblical interpreters and theologians. The essays here explore various facets of reception history-textual transmission, the identification of editions used, the deployment of these sources in doctrinal formulation, in polemic, and in relation to the contested site of 'catholicity'. The second broad theme is engagement with other confessional identities and allegiances. The essays presented here shed light on the past and stimulate contemporary theological reflection.

BOOK EXCERPT:

ELEVEN MEN embarked upon a journey in 1894 with one objective: ...to find the great spiritual teachers of the Far East and witness their uncommon abilities. Since these Masters were scattered over a wide territory that covered a large portion of India, Tibet, China, and Persia, they knew it could take years of searching many secluded villages and hidden mountain communes. Planning each step of the journey became a challenge knowing that countless miles of rugged terrain separated the remote and isolate locations that were imperative to the exploration. Even though they could plot their route on a map and see where they were headed, the destination deep within the souls of eleven scientifically trained men remained uncertain. Baird T. Political Learning In Adulthood

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In the wake of World War II, the issues of political stability in general and the survival of stable democracies in particular captured the attention of American political scientists. An inevitable offshoot of this interest was the study of political behavior--how it is acquired and how and why it persists. In its early stages, work on political socialization focused exclusively on childhood and adolescence, as if the learning process ends when adulthood begins. Only recently has adult socialization emerged as a legitimate field of study within political science. In Political Learning in Adulthood, social scientists for the first time examine the changes in political outlook and behavior that take place during the adult years, providing an invaluable overview of the problems, theories, and methodological approaches that characterize the field of political socialization. They consider which political values remain constant and which are subject to change, and they explore the ways in which both ordinary and extraordinary life events affect adults' political worldviews. Among specific topics considered are the effects of age and aging, the relation between participation in the work force and the development and expression of political views, continuity and change in the wake of revolutionary social and political movements, and the effects of such traumatic and life-threatening situations as war and terrorist activity.
