BOOK EXCERPT:
But he never forgot the "God of his youth," and a relationship that nourished and protected him when he was very young. Twenty years go by, and Michael is married and fully invested in his chosen profession, yet still angry at God. It was in the rooms of Al-Anon where Michael rediscovered his faith in a God that cares and began the challenging journey back to the "God of his youth." But God wasn't through with Michael. In 1985, having a profound spiritual experience, he rededicated his life to the Lord, accepting God's forgiveness, mercy and grace for his past indiscretions. The Scriptures became alive to him. He devoured the Scriptures at every opportunity. Since then, he has been in leadership in various churches. But God had more blessings for Michael. He hit another bottom when his attorney job ended. Shortly after that he attended Sierra Tucson for treatment of his codependency, grief and other unresolved issues. This was another turning point in his life. Michael uses his experience as a lawyer and Christian Life Coach to be of greater service to others. Since 1998, Michael runs "The Serenity Shack," a sober living home for men. Michael lives in Long Beach, CA. Taking his Australian Shepherd, Oreo, for her run is the favorite part of his (and her) day. He can be contacted at hisbagofgold@juno.com.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In my minds eye, a little girl crouches in a dark and cluttered hallway closet. Mountains of stuff fill this tiny room, where she remains hidden from everyone and everything. Besides the stuff of anger and doubt in this small space, the walls have writing on them that names the fears, insecurities, and reasons for shielding herself from the unfamiliar and the unknown. Many times, the little girl tries to exit her safe place. With a mask of self-prescribed extroversion, she determinedly leaves the four walls of her secret domain to be good at things and peoplea good student, wife, even a mother. Hesitantly, she tells herself that hope and joy are within reach. But after a short stay away from the security of the hallway closet, the little girl goes back inside and continues hiding from life. I was that young girl. I did not want to live this way any longer, so I cried out to Godwho had been with me all along. He knew my pain, insecurities, anger, and fear. Bigger than any wall of self-protection I built, God would bring down these walls if I let him. My crying out was the first step.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Frederik Poulsen investigates the role of the Old Testament in biblical theology. Analyzing the works of Brevard Childs and Hans Hubner, he addresses main issues regarding the different versions of the Old Testament (the Hebrew Bible and the Greek Septuagint) and the significance of the New Testament's use of the Old. The author explores the interpretative implications of these issues by focusing extensively on Isaiah 42:1-9. The Hebrew version as such is ambiguous regarding the servant figure being portrayed, his identity, and his task. The Septuagint renders several key terms and statements differently and the reception of the passage in the New Testament reveals a manifold of diverse interpretations. Common to all versions is the servant's role as a mediator between God and the nations. Frederik Poulsen shows that this central task is constantly being reapplied to new servant figures.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The present volume is the fifth in a five-volume study of church doctrine. The multivolume set covers the major parts of church doctrine: Canon, God, Creation, Reconciliation, and Redemption. The first volume begins with an introduction to the entire project on why doctrine matters, which stresses the ecumenical, global, and above all biblical horizons of church doctrine as a primary expression of Christian witness. The purpose of this fifth volume is to explicate the full reality of God’s redeeming love for the whole creation. In the doctrine of redemption, the church looks forward in hope. Through the gift of the Spirit at Pentecost the church is gathered out of all nations and peoples of the earth, and looks forward to the coming day of final redemption for the whole cosmos. Yet even now, the promise of God’s coming is active in the world, rendering the church into a new humanity, establishing a new society, calling every individual to a new life of joy in discipleship. Church doctrine is not a luxury, but a necessity for the living community of faith, by which its witness in word and deed is tested against the one true measure of Christ the risen Lord.
