Gray refined the classifications offered up by Lowth in his 'Lectures on the Sacred Poetry of the Hebrews'. Gray developed ingenious readings of texts which had been previously been seen as corrupt and readable only with major emendations. Gray deduced principles of Semitic poetry which allowed these texts to be sensibly read without emendation.

Prayer From Alexander To Constantine presents a diverse selection of prayer chosen by over 40 different historians, all specialists in their respective areas of Graeco-Roman literature. This collaboration gives the book a range and depth that no individual author could hope to rival. Each selection includes an introductory essay, followed by a new English translation of the prayer, accompanied by critical notes and biography. This handbook explores the formation of Christianity in Northern Africa from the second century CE until the present. It focuses on the reception of Scripture in the life of the Church, the processes of decision making, the theological and philosophical reflections of the Church Fathers in various cultural contexts, and schismatic or heretical movements. Volume one covers the first four centuries up until the time of Augustine.

The Gospel of John is a magnificent book. Intricate fabrics interweave its beautiful robe and its material is a finely twisted linen of many colors. Throughout the history of the church, interpreters have long been captivated by its loveliness and power. Many modern interpreters, however, would not hesitate to call it puzzling, confusing, or ridden with riddles at least. "What is John?" is therefore a fascinating question that lingers. During the last half century, literary theories have been brought into the study of the Fourth Gospel with varying degrees of success. Volume II contains Anne Dutton's once well-known and widely circulated A Discourse upon Waling with God (1735). Once read and referred to by George Whitefield, it contains spiritual insights for practical daily living. Dutton's hymns and poetry are also included in this volume. Dutton's poetry, A Narration of the Wonders of Grace (1734), was a prominent publication in her day. It contained 1,504 lines of poetry in six parts based on themes of salvation. Her biographer, J.C. Whitebrook, referred to it as her chief literary production. Sixty-one of Dutton's hymns composed on several subjects are also included in that volume. Her biographer, J.A. Jones, noted that these were written for plain and homely folk in the midland countries. Dutton's contribution to evangelical spirituality, poetry, and hymnody in the Baptist tradition is significant.
