BOOK EXCERPT:
Lily on the Northern Sky are images of human behaviour and a humble narration of existential paradoxes, though, without love and emotion, life becomes meaningless. Superstitions must not supersede our living being. ‘Twins in the womb’ gives a classical narrative of the killing of a girl child who resists dying. In the womb of the mother, when the sister asks her brother, ‘You go first, dear brother, They will be happy to get a boy. Then I come to be overlooked, Perhaps I shall not die as a coy.’ She puts a question mark on the very existence of womanhood. Similarly, the girl ‘Laxmi’ who was born and brought up on the platform of a railway station and destined to become mother at the age of fifteen, finds hyenas everywhere. ‘Alice’ has described how ‘Fooling others’ is a big-time lucrative profession in India.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Sixteen unforgettable stories from a “beguiling writer” and the Edgar Award–winning author of the Chronicles of Brother Cadfael (The Daily Telegraph). Expanding her horizons far beyond the boundaries of crime fiction, Ellis Peters offers a broad range of short stories in this collection. Two friends, cruelly torn apart when their country is violently sundered, reach a surprising understanding. An Englishwoman’s life changes in a foreign land after she accepts a young light-boy’s offer to show her “a god.” And in the bewitching titular story, an inquisitive reporter investigates the strange hidden history of an elegant London stylist after the body of the enigmatic icon is discovered, immaculately dressed, lying in the ebony coffin that he kept at the side of his bed for years. Exploring life and death, opera and art, love and vengeance, grace and goodness, the poison of prejudice, and the horrors of war, these remarkable stories are as surprising and enthralling as the author’s acclaimed, award-winning novels, proving once again that “Peters writes with undiminished skill” (The Times, London).

BOOK EXCERPT:
Immigrants: Volume I – Dragon Tooth Gold Series By: Kent J. McGrew Immigrants: Volume I – Dragon Tooth Gold Series begins the story of Aaden Callahan and Anna Mercier; two landed immigrants. They meet while teaching at Columbia University in New York City. The year is 1841. The young Dr. Callahan woos and wins the heart of the smart and beautiful Anna, but their courtship isn't easy. Kent J. McGrew brings years of industrial experience as a metallurgical engineer to every aspect of his stories. A sailing trip doesn't just take you somewhere, it teaches navigation and the skills to weather hurricanes, fight pirates and outwit the oppressive laws of the day concerning African Americans. Through the eyes of his characters, his readers get to experience America in the mid 1800's where land and resources were in abundance to all who worked with determination. The industrial revolution is robust and the Callahan family shape an empire with whiskey and lumber and a loyal labor force in the form of emancipated slaves. Dragon Tooth gold is uniquely laden with the engineering and technology of the times. Our ancestors worked hard and despite the current feeling that their thinking was old fashion, everything that they did successfully was well thought out, sometimes beyond genius. I want my readers to see our roots in the reality of getting the work done. In our age of information, invention and innovation are all too often taken for granted. Our physical world still needs to be put together piece by piece. Knowing how we got where we are today will help us prevent the mistakes, prejudices, and misconceptions of the past.
