In this book we shall study linear functional equations of the form m bu(x) == Lak(X)U(Qk(X)) = f(x), (1) k=l where U is an unknown function from a given space F(X) of functions on a set X, Qk: X -+ X are given mappings, ak and f are given functions. Our approach is based on the investigation of the operators given by the left-hand side of equa tion (1). In what follows such operators will be called functional operators. We will pay special attention to the spectral properties of functional operators, first of all, to invertibility and the Noether property. Since the set X, the space F(X), the mappings Qk and the coefficients ak are arbitrary, the class of operators of the form (1) is very rich and some of its individ ual representatives are related with problems arising in various areas of mathemat ics and its applications. In addition to the classical theory of functional equations, among such areas one can indicate the theory of functional-differential equations with deviating argument, the theory of nonlocal problems for partial differential equations, the theory of boundary value problems for the equation of a vibrating string and equations of mixed type, a number of problems of the general theory of operator algebras and the theory of dynamical systems, the spectral theory of au tomorphisms of Banach algebras, and other problems.

The monograph is devoted to the study of functional equations with the transformed argument on the real line and on the unit circle. Such equations systematically arise in dynamical systems, differential equations, probabilities, singularities of smooth mappings, and other areas. The purpose of the book is to present modern methods and new results in the subject, with an emphasis on a connection between local and global solvability. The general concepts developed in the book are applicable to multidimensional functional equations. Some of the methods are presented for the first time in the monograph literature. The book is addressed to graduates and researchers interested in dynamical systems, differential equations, operator theory, or the theory of functions and their applications.

Together with the authors' Volume I. C*-Theory, the two parts comprising Functional Differential Equations: II. C*-Applications form a masterful work-the first thorough, up-to-date exposition of this field of modern analysis lying between differential equations and C*-algebras. The two parts of Volume II contain the applications of the C*-structures and theory developed in Volume I. They show the technique of using the C*-results in the study of the solvability conditions of non-local functional differential equations and demonstrate the fundamental principles underlying the interrelations between C* and functional differential objects. The aim of the book is to present new results in operator theory and its applications. In particular, the book is devoted to operators with automorphic symbols, applications of the methods of modern operator theory and differential geometry to some problems of theory of elasticity, quantum mechanics, hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations with multiple characteristics, Laplace-Beltrami operators on manifolds with singular points. Moreover, the book comprises new results in the theory of Wiener-Hopf operators with oscillating symbols, large hermitian Toeplitz band matrices, commutative algebras of Toeplitz operators, and discusses a number of other topics.

This is a volume originating from the Conference on Partial Differential Equations and Applications, which was held in Moscow in November 2018 in memory of professor Boris Sternin and attracted more than a hundred participants from eighteen countries. The conference was mainly dedicated to partial differential equations on manifolds and their applications in mathematical physics, geometry, topology, and complex analysis. The volume contains selected contributions by leading experts in these fields and presents the current state of the art in several areas of PDE. It will be of interest to researchers and graduate students specializing in partial differential equations, mathematical physics, topology, geometry, and their applications. The readers will benefit from the interplay between these various areas of mathematics.

This volume consists of twenty peer-reviewed papers from the special session on pseudodifferential operators and the special session on generalized functions and asymptotics at the Eighth Congress of ISAAC held at the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia in Moscow on August 22‒27, 2011. The category of papers on pseudo-differential operators contains such topics as elliptic operators assigned to diffeomorphisms of smooth manifolds, analysis on singular manifolds with edges, heat kernels and Green functions of sub-Laplacians on the Heisenberg group and Lie groups with more complexities than but closely related to the Heisenberg group, Lp-boundedness of pseudo-differential operators on the torus, and pseudo-differential operators related to time-frequency analysis. The second group of papers contains various classes of distributions and algebras of generalized functions with applications in linear and nonlinear differential equations, initial value problems and boundary value problems, stochastic and Malliavin-type differential equations. This second group of papers are related to the third collection of papers via the setting of Colombeau-type spaces and algebras in which microlocal analysis is developed by means of techniques in asymptotics. The volume contains the synergies of the three areas treated and is a useful complement to volumes 155, 164, 172, 189, 205 and 213 published in the same series in, respectively, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011.

The book deals with dynamical systems, generated by linear mappings of finite dimensional spaces and their applications. These systems have a relatively simple structure from the point of view of the modern dynamical systems theory. However, for the dynamical systems of this sort, it is possible to obtain explicit answers to specific questions being useful in applications. The considered problems are natural and look rather simple, but in reality in the course of investigation, they confront users with plenty of subtle questions and their detailed analysis needs a substantial effort. The problems arising are related to linear algebra and dynamical systems theory, and therefore, the book can be considered as a natural amplification, refinement and supplement to linear algebra and dynamical systems theory textbooks.

This volume contains the proceedings of the International Workshop on Operator Theory and Applications held at the University of Algarve in Faro, Portugal, September 12-15, in the year 2000. The main topics of the conference were !> Factorization Theory; !> Factorization and Integrable Systems; !> Operator Theoretical Methods in Diffraction Theory; !> Algebraic Techniques in Operator Theory; !> Applications to Mathematical Physics and Related Topics. A total of 94 colleagues from 21 countries participated in the conference. The major part of participants came from Portugal (32), Germany (17), Israel (6), Mexico (6), the Netherlands (5), USA (4) and Austria (4). The others were from Ukraine, Venezuela (3 each), Spain, Sweden (2 each), Algeria, Australia, Belorussia, France, Georgia, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Russia and Turkey (one of each country). It was the 12th meeting in the framework of the IWOTA conferences which started in 1981 on an initiative of Professors 1. Gohberg (Tel Aviv) and J. W. Helton (San Diego). Up to now, it was the largest conference in the field of Operator Theory in Portugal.

Functional Analysis is a comprehensive, 2-volume treatment of a subject lying at the core of modern analysis and mathemati- cal physics. The first volume reviews basic concepts such as the measure, the integral, Banach spaces, bounded operators and generalized functions. Volume II moves on to more ad- vanced topics including unbounded operators, spectral decomposition, expansion in generalized eigenvectors, rigged spaces, and partial differential operators. These proceedings comprise a large part of the papers presented at the In ternational Conference Factorization, Singular Operators and related problems, which was held from January 28 to February 1, 2002, at the University of th Madeira, Funchal, Portugal, to mark Professor Georgii Litvinchuk's 70 birth day. Experts in a variety of fields came to this conference to pay tribute to the great achievements of Professor Georgii Litvinchuk in the development of vari ous areas of operator theory. The main themes of the conference were focussed around the theory of singular type operators and factorization problems, but other topics such as potential theory and fractional calculus, to name but a couple, were also presented. The goal of the conference was to bring together mathematicians from var ious fields within operator theory and function theory in order to highlight recent advances in problems many of which were originally studied by Profes sor Litvinchuk and his scientific school. A second aim was to stimulate in ternational collaboration even further and promote the interaction of different approaches in current research in these areas. The Proceedings will be of great interest to researchers in Operator The ory, Real and Complex Analysis, Functional and Harmonic Analysis, Potential Theory, Fractional Calculus and other areas, as well as to graduate students looking for the latest results.
