In 1992 world leaders met at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro to reaffirm the Declaration of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment that was established on June 16, 1972 in Stockholm. The meeting resulted in the adoption of Agenda 21 by the member states which is a framework for the transition to a more sustainable world. In 2012 the members gathered to assess and reaffirm the importance of progress towards the efforts of Agenda 21. In response to this the Institute of Medicine's (IOM's) Roundtable on Environmental Health Sciences, Research, and Medicine held a workshop to inform the policies that are discussed at the 2012 Earth Summit. The workshop, held in Woods Hole, Massachusetts on July 25-26, 2011, focused on the issue of sustainability and health as well as the linkages that are currently present between the two. The workshop included presentations and discussions which are summarized in Public Health Linkages with Sustainability: Workshop Summary. The report presents how different areas of public health, such as food and water resources, link to sustainability and opportunities or venues that can be examined.

This book critically examines different forms of urban-rural links for sustainable development in different countries. As intertwined processes of globalization, digitalization, environmental challenges and the search for sustainable development continue, rural and urban areas around the world become increasingly interconnected and interdependent. This book contributes to understanding the role of this growing interconnectedness from an economic geographical perspective. It does so by theoretically and empirically addressing the various existing linkages, such as food networks, value chains, and regional governance at local, regional, national and international levels. In doing so, contributions extend and contrast existing approaches dealing with urban and rural areas separately by considering the interplay between these two as well as their consequences for sustainability transition pathways. This edited volume adds to the academic and policy debate by bringing together a variety of concepts and themes in order to shift the research and policy agenda away from simple dichotomy to different notions of rural-urban linkages. This volume picks up from where a previously edited title in this book series - Rural-Urban Linkages and Sustainable Development in Africa (2018) left off, by presenting nine new case studies from various parts of the African continent. These cases illustrate the complex and multifaceted interactions between cities and rural areas, through the flow of resources, people, capital, information, and goods which directly impact the sustainable development of these concerned areas. Contributions are drawn from young faculty and graduates from the three master’s programmes in Sustainable Urban Development, Sustainable Integrated Rural Development and Mining and Mineral Resources, coordinated by the eight partner African universities who make up the Education for Sustainable Development in Africa (ESDA) initiative. The volume is part of the ESDA book series that serves primarily as undergraduate and graduate instruction materials for courses on sustainable development in Africa. It also aims to inform policy initiatives on development issues on the continent.

Protected areas were originally established as recreational spaces and to protect some components of nature; however, today they are also expected to provide an increasing range of benefits to an array of people. Uranium industry occupies a very important place in the socio-economic sphere of East Singhbhum District of Jharkhand ever since its inception in 1967 it has played an important role in influencing health, education, crime, employment, income, migration & displacement and environment of the people of surrounding area. The industry has situated at Jaduguda, which falls under Mushabani and Potka Block of East Singhbhum District of Jharkhand. The socio-economic life of the people residing in and around this area has influenced by this in Jaduguda. The findings are based on a comparison of data on variables like health, education, crime, employment, income, migration & displacement and environment prior to inception of the mines and the situation at present time. It has observed that there has been positive impact on education employment and income. However, the study also observed there are certain negative linkages also. The important one is being deterioration of the health of the people, environmental degradation, and increasing rate of crime, migration & displacement. This study provides a means of identifying and tracking indicators associated with community vitality in Jaduguda communities that relate to the uranium mining industry including approaches that assess community health (physical, mental/emotional, spiritual/cultural, and social), community quality of life, community sustainable development, and community wellness as such, it has undertaken a broad array of studies since its inception, guided by input from community members from Jaduguda. As such, the purpose of the study is to identify the socio-economic linkages both beneficial and otherwise that the modern uranium mining industry has had on Jaduguda, and its residents and communities.
