My Life With Lions Tigers Bears Elephants

BOOK EXCERPT:

This is my story. It may sound unbelievable but it is all true. My story starts in 1945 in Flushing, New York in Queens. My mother and father were divorced when I was two years old. I lived with my mother until I was eight years old. My dad came to see me on the weekends. He and I would go to the race tracks and watch the horses run. He knew a lot of people at the race tracks. This was a fun time. I met a lot of jockeys and trainers when I was nine years old. About this time I became hard for my mother to handle and she sent me to live with my dad. We lived in rooms at my grandfather’s apartment building. This is the beginning of my story.

Oz

BOOK EXCERPT:

Adventure is just down the Yellow Brick Road… The award-winning author and illustrator of Neverland returns with another beautiful RPG setting book, in OZ: A Fantasy Role-Playing Game. While many have traveled with Dorothy Gale to the world of OZ, there is so much more to explore! But know this: there is more to the land and its inhabitants than the rumors might suggest. Appearances can be deceiving and like any good metal smith will tell you, the only way to tell a gold bar from a yellow brick is to hit it with a hammer. So begins Andrew Kolb’s OZ: A Fantasy Role-Playing Game. While 5th Edition compatible like its predecessor, Neverland, OZ uses an urban setting pointcrawl instead of a hexcrawl, full of secrets to discover via underground trains and a monorail that loops around all four districts of OZ. With different neighborhoods to explore, factions to join, and questions to ask (what happened to The Slippers, anyway?) players can escape to the Emerald City for hours on end.

Eight Bears Mythic Past And Imperiled Future

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

A global exploration of the eight remaining species of bears—and the dangers they face. Bears have always held a central place in our collective memory, from Indigenous folklore and Greek mythology to nineteenth-century fairytales and the modern toy shop. But as humans and bears come into ever-closer contact, our relationship nears a tipping point. Today, most of the eight remaining bear species are threatened with extinction. Some, such as the panda bear and the polar bear, are icons of the natural world; others, such as the spectacled bear and the sloth bear, are far less known. In Eight Bears, journalist Gloria Dickie embarks on a globe-trotting journey to explore each bear’s story, whisking readers from the cloud forests of the Andes to the ice floes of the Arctic; from the jungles of India to the backwoods of the Rocky Mountain West. She meets with key figures on the frontlines of modern conservation efforts—the head of a rescue center for sun and moon bears freed from bile farms, a biologist known as Papa Panda, who has led China’s panda-breeding efforts for almost four decades, a conservationist retraining a military radar system to detect and track polar bears near towns—to reveal the unparalleled challenges bears face as they contend with a rapidly changing climate and encroaching human populations. Weaving together ecology, history, mythology, and a captivating account of her travels and observations, Dickie offers a closer look at our volatile relationship with these magnificent mammals. Engrossing and deeply reported, Eight Bears delivers a clear warning for what we risk losing if we don’t learn to live alongside the animals that have shaped our cultures, geographies, and stories.
