Student Centered Learning By Design

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Current research is pushing schools to adopt more student-centered approaches to the classroom experience, and educators—librarians and classroom teachers alike—are being challenged to revise their curricula and instruction to be student-centered, personalized, and differentiated. This book empowers librarians, teachers, and administrators to be empathic problem-solvers and decision-makers. By reframing the challenges that members of a learning community face as opportunities to better meet teaching and learning needs, readers will find that adoption of a mindset focused on users—namely, design thinking—elevates and creates opportunities for innovating pedagogy. Moreover, it can enhance school culture as well as build channels of communication among various stakeholders in schools and districts. When educators of any subject or discipline apply design thinking skills to their curriculum implementation, authentic student-centered learning experiences become the core of the learning experience. The case studies shared in this book provide examples of student-centered approaches being used in elementary, middle, and high schools, so that readers have many models on which to base their work and from which to build confidence in shifting their pedagogy to keep the student at the center of teaching and learning decisions.

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2022 in the subject Pedagogy - School Pedagogics, , language: English, abstract: A student-centered teaching and learning process is essential in all facets of education. Student-centeredness and localization and integration of students' learning preferences are equally important in learners’ individual capacities to learn. In an educational learning recovery setting, these approaches are valuable to students' learning. These issues prompted the researchers to assess the effectiveness of student-centered, localized teaching and learning materials in enhancing learners’ academic performance, particularly in TLE subjects. The primary goal of this study is to determine the significance of innovative teaching and learning materials in enhancing TLE literacy at Tinurik National High School, Division of Tanauan City, Batangas Province. The study was conducted using a mixed-methods research approach. The research tools used were a questionnaire for a survey and test results. Based on the results of the online survey and the test results of the students, the data was gathered. A Google Form was used to disseminate the online survey to the respondents who were learners. Tests were run both before and after the innovative teaching and learning materials were put into use. To gather sufficient data for the study's goals, the test and questionnaire were created. Through convenience sampling, 153 students total have been selected. To analyze the data, frequencies, percentages, weighted means, correlations, and T-tests were employed.

Fostering Habits Of Mind In Today S Students

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Co-published with and Students need more than just academic skills for success in college and career, and the lack of an explicit instructional focus on the “soft skills” critical to postsecondary success poses a challenge for many students who enter college, especially the underprepared. Based upon a multi-campus, cross-disciplinary collaboration, this book presents the resulting set of habits-of-mind-based strategies that demonstrably help not only low-income, ESL, and first-generation college students overcome obstacles on the path to degree completion; these strategies equally benefit all students. They promote life-long, integrative learning and foster intellectual qualities such as curiosity, openness, flexibility, engagement, and persistence that are the key to developing internalized and transferrable competencies that are seldom given direct attention in college classrooms. This contributed volume, written with full-time and adjunct faculty in mind, provides the rationale for this pedagogical approach and presents the sequential instructional cycle that begins by identifying students’ assets and progressively focusing on specific habits to develop their capacity to transfer their learning to new tasks and situations.Faculty from both two-year and four-year colleges provide examples of how they implement these practices in English, math, and General Education courses, and demonstrate the applicability of these practices across course types and disciplines.Chapters address key factors of college success, including:* The link between habits of mind and student retention and achievement* Using an assets-based approach to teaching and learning* Supporting and engaging students* Creating inclusive learning communities* Building confidence and self-efficacy* Promoting transfer of learning* Teacher networks and cross-disciplinary collaborationBy foregrounding habits of mind as an instructional lens, this book makes a unique contribution to teaching in developmental and general education settings.
