BOOK EXCERPT:
Was Joseph as a spoiled brat who loved to lord it over his brothers and pretty much got what he deserved? Was he a wise determined young man who did everything he could to end his familys sad history of deception and dysfunction? Was he simply as an innocent victim of the twists and turns of life? Were the events in his life chance happenings, so all he could do was make the best of it? Or were they results of his choices - or Gods choices - or both? Could it be that what happens to us is meant to affect what happens in us? Could it be that the events of our lives are invitations from God to enter into partnership with Him? Do our choices and Gods choices somehow work in partnership to move us through the tough times into the next chapter of our life story?

BOOK EXCERPT:
The stories within the pages take time forward and out of my early years. This completes those years and moves it forward past the first sixty. The chapters tell of the trials that I faced as the years passed by. It also tells of the largest change in life that I will face in my later years. Over half of the chapters cover this change. Others have said that I do not know what they have gone through when the loss of a spouse happens. They are wrong; they do not know what I have gone through unless they read the story within. Life was passing by with my spouse of thirty-seven years. She spent the last few years in an assisted-living facility. Follow the last days we lived as a couple and the issues I now face as a single man. I am back on my path, walking alone. Life for me takes an unfavorable turn for the worse. Everything changed after the stroke of midnight, on New Year’s Day. I may never recover from this loss, as I look down and see her name etched in stone.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Prayer is one of the central activities of Christian life. This anniversary edition of Karl Barth's lectures on the Lord's Prayer, along with supplementary essays by three Barth scholars, introduces us to what he had to say about this important Christian practice. For Barth, the ultimate aim of all theology is worship, and here he mines the theological and spiritual wisdom of Luther, Calvin, and the Heidelberg Catechism, urging us to participate in the work of God through prayer.

BOOK EXCERPT:
A resurgence of the Social Gospel is energizing many evangelicals, but what does the Bible say about the role of humanitarian works in the Christian life? As new covenant believers, Christians are called to a specific central task: to be ministers of God's message of salvation for sinners. At the same time, the New Testament justifies nearly every concern of the revitalized Social Gospel. Care for the poor and needy, reconciliation of social and racial divisions, and nurture for the sick and abused -- all can be biblical and Christ-honoring activities. Ryan Dobson and Christian Buckley have a message for believers on either side of the battle lines hardening around today's Social Gospel. To those on the Religious Left, they say: "Don't forget that Jesus Christ died to save sinners, not to bring about political change." To those on the Religious Right, they say: "Don't forget that Jesus spent much of his time helping the sick, the poor, and the needy." A corrective and a call to action all in one, Humanitarian Jesus shows that evangelism and good works coexist harmoniously when social investment is subservient to and supportive of the church's primary mission of worship, evangelism, and discipleship. In accessible and non-academic style, Dobson and Buckley outline the biblical case for humanitarian concern. They also engage the topic through interviews with leading Christian thinkers, activists, and humanitarian workers -- including Franklin Graham, Gary Haugen, Ron Sider, Tony Campolo, and many more -- seeking to define a broadly biblical approach to good works that all Christians can join hands around.

When you really love Jesus and this love becomes more than just words, you start to love people and do what it takes to help them, in spite of what it may cost you. When you really love others with Christ Jesuss love, you are forced to conquer whatever your personal problems are in order to forgive and be forgiven. The more you love Jesus, the greater your loving concern for everyone will be. The more you love Jesus, the more you will feel real pain for others. The more you love Jesus, the more you will want to obey Jesus; allowing the power of the Holy Spirit to work in and through you to produce more spiritual fruit in you. The more spiritual growth you receive, the more fleshly wars and the more spiritual wars you will become involved in with yourself and with Satan. Beware, Satan will quite often hassle you in the secrets of your own mind over your past sins or even the sins of your loved ones. There may be spiritual wars that you will have to fight. At times you may feel these battles are not your responsibility, so you dont deserve them because they were not your fault. However, you are still forced to fight them secretly, because Satans plan is to bind up and destroy all Christians. Remember, Satan cannot win over you if you stay true to Jesus and keep your mind fixed on HIM.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The Meaning of Life and the Great Philosophers reveals how great philosophers of the past sought to answer the question of the meaning of life. This edited collection includes thirty-five chapters which each focus on a major philosophical figure, from Confucius to Rorty, and that imaginatively engage with the topic from their perspective. This volume also contains a Postscript on the historical origins and original significance of the phrase ‘the meaning of life’. Written by leading experts in the field, such as A.C. Grayling, Thaddeus Metz and John Cottingham, this unique and engaging book explores the relevance of the history of philosophy to contemporary debates. It will prove essential reading for students and scholars studying the history of philosophy, philosophy of religion, ethics, metaphysics or comparative philosophy.
