Living Together Separately

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Much has been written about the religious and political conflicts of contemporary Jerusalem--and about the harsh realities of the intifada. But while analysts probe the violence in the "reunited city," its residents must go about their daily affairs. Focusing on the conduct of everyday life, rather than on ideology, Living Together Separately provides a rare look at the complex networks of practical relations developed by Jews and Arabs in over two decades of Israeli control of the city. The work begins with a brief historical review of Jerusalem as an Arab-Jewish city. Then, combining the perspectives of urban geography and social anthropology, it addresses a wide range of questions. How does the use of urban space and urban systems reflect both segregation and integration? How do ethnic identities influence interactions in adjoining neighborhoods, in workplaces, and in a hospital? What rules govern Arab-Jewish contacts in business, consumer, and political settings? In the final chapter the authors evaluate the Jerusalem situation in comparison with conditions in other deeply divided cities and in light of the intifada. Long-time residents of Jerusalem, Romann and Weingrod seek to grasp the variety of day-to-day exchanges without preconceptions and from the viewpoints of all participants. "Michael Romann and Alex Weingrod are my pick to serve on a jury trying a very tangled case."--Fouad Ajami, School of International Studies, The Johns Hopkins University Originally published in 1991. A Life Separate Together

BOOK EXCERPT:

Gary Smith, Photographer, and author of The Willing, uses his unique perspective and well-honed instincts to take us on a journey replete with vivid descriptions of the beauty and culture of Northern Italy. “Real life” fictional character Warren Steelgrave has settled into his author’s persona amongst new-found relatives and friends in a small village in Northern Italy. After three years, his possible soulmate and object of romantic memories, Cindy O’Brian comes back into his life. New adventures unfold involving the son of an old friend and the intrigue of the FBI, a crime family, and a long-lost secret for Nicola Tesla’s “death ray”. Warren is again “willing” to put his life on the line, but can Cindy accept the realization that the man she loves will always “live a life separate” even if they are together? While they are back in the United States, with trouble in tow, his eldest daughter adds insight when she tells Cindy “welcome to Warren’s world.” Perhaps the safest place to enjoy the unfolding of events is from a safe distance as the reader of Mr. Smith’s newest novel. Separate Schools

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Starting in 1943, millions of children were separated into boys' and girls' schools in cities across the Soviet Union. The government sought to reinforce gender roles in a wartime context and to strengthen discipline and order by separating boys and girls into different classrooms. The program was a failure. Discipline further deteriorated in boys' schools, and despite intentions to keep the education equal, girls' schools experienced increased perceptions of academic inferiority, particularly in the subjects of math and science. The restoration of coeducation in 1954 demonstrated the power of public opinion, even in a dictatorship, to influence school policies. In the first full-length study of the program, Ewing examines this large-scale experiment across the full cycle of deliberating, advocating, implementing, experiencing, criticizing, and finally repudiating separate schools. Looking at the encounters of pupils in classrooms, policy objectives of communist leaders, and growing opposition to separate schools among teachers and parents, Ewing provides new insights into the last decade of Stalin's dictatorship. A comparative analysis of the Soviet case with recent efforts in the United States and elsewhere raises important questions. Based on extensive research that includes the archives of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, Separate Schools will appeal to historians of Russia, those interested in comparative education and educational history, and specialists in gender studies.
