This volume collects presentations from the international workshop on local cohomology held in Guanajuato, Mexico, including expanded lecture notes of two minicourses on applications in equivariant topology and foundations of duality theory, and chapters on finiteness properties, D-modules, monomial ideals, combinatorial analysis, and related topics.

This book is aimed to provide an introduction to local cohomology which takes cognizance of the breadth of its interactions with other areas of mathematics. It covers topics such as the number of defining equations of algebraic sets, connectedness properties of algebraic sets, connections to sheaf cohomology and to de Rham cohomology, Gröbner bases in the commutative setting as well as for $D$-modules, the Frobenius morphism and characteristic $p$ methods, finiteness properties of local cohomology modules, semigroup rings and polyhedral geometry, and hypergeometric systems arising from semigroups. The book begins with basic notions in geometry, sheaf theory, and homological algebra leading to the definition and basic properties of local cohomology. Then it develops the theory in a number of different directions, and draws connections with topology, geometry, combinatorics, and algorithmic aspects of the subject.

The first Joint AMS-India Mathematics Meeting was held in Bangalore (India). This book presents articles written by speakers from a special session on commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. Included are contributions from some leading researchers around the world in this subject area. The volume contains new and original research papers and survey articles suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry.

On its original publication, this algebraic introduction to Grothendieck's local cohomology theory was the first book devoted solely to the topic and it has since become the standard reference for graduate students. This second edition has been thoroughly revised and updated to incorporate recent developments in the field.

This book is based on talks presented at the Summer School on Interactions between Homotopy theory and Algebra held at the University of Chicago in the summer of 2004. The goal of this book is to create a resource for background and for current directions of research related to deep connections between homotopy theory and algebra, including algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, and representation theory. The articles in this book are aimed at the audience of beginning researchers with varied mathematical backgrounds and have been written with both the quality of exposition and the accessibility to novices in mind.

This book discusses recent developments and the latest research in algebra and related topics. This book presents four lectures on Rees rings and blow-ups, Koszul modules with applications to syzygies, Gröbner bases and degenerations, and applications of Adams operations. Commutative Algebra has witnessed a number of spectacular developments in recent years, including the resolution of long-standing problems; the new techniques and perspectives are leading to an extraordinary transformation in the field. This work covers three important aspects of monomials ideals in the three chapters "Stanley decompositions" by Jürgen Herzog, "Edge ideals" by Adam Van Tuyl and "Local cohomology" by Josep Álvarez Montaner. The chapters, written by top experts, include computer tutorials that emphasize the computational aspects of the respective areas. Monomial ideals and algebras are, in a sense, among the simplest structures in commutative algebra and the main objects of combinatorial commutative algebra. Also, they are of major importance for at least three reasons. Firstly, Gröbner basis theory allows us to treat certain problems on general polynomial ideals by means of monomial ideals. Secondly, the combinatorial structure of monomial ideals connects them to other combinatorial structures and allows us to solve problems on both sides of this correspondence using the techniques of each of the respective areas. And thirdly, the combinatorial nature of monomial ideals also makes them particularly well suited to the development of algorithms to work with them and then generate algorithms for more general structures.

With contributions derived from presentations at an international conference, Non-Associative Algebra and Its Applications explores a wide range of topics focusing on Lie algebras, nonassociative rings and algebras, quasigroups, loops, and related systems as well as applications of nonassociative algebra to geometry, physics, and natural sciences.
