BOOK EXCERPT:
Like some people recently retired, Mark had taken on a diversion that pretty well takes up much of his time. At one time, he collected baseball cards, a pastime that required him to acquire cards through trades with fellow enthusiasts or winning cards through arcane competitions when the application of Facebook allowed him to accumulate cards more easily. Several years later, on an airplane flight from Montreal to New York City, Mark glimpses a television show being shown on a computer laptop belonging to a woman sitting in a seat across the aisle of that flight. Mark thinks and then becomes convinced that one of the actresses playing a woman in that show is in fact his first girlfriend. That realization results in a search for the identity of that woman though a variety of methods and sources, an effort that culminates in a rendezvous with his memory.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The Development of Memory in Infancy and Childhood provides a thorough update and expansion of the previous edition and offers new research on significant themes and ideas that have emerged in the past decade such as the cognitive neuroscience of memory development, autobiographical memory and infantile amnesia, and the cognitive and social factors that underlie memory for events. In this volume, Courage and Cowan bring together leading international experts to review the current state of the science of memory development in their own research areas. They note questions of theory and basic science addressed in their research, highlight the real-world applications of those findings, and propose an agenda for future research. The book also considers the implications of their work for the development of atypical children, specifically, how these new findings might be adapted to enrich the lives of those children and to inform and validate our current expectations of individual differences in the development of typical children. The first of three groups of chapters focuses on basic neurobiological, perceptual, and cognitive processes that underlie memory and its development (i.e., encoding, consolidation and storage, retrieval). The second group focuses primarily on the social, contextual, and cultural factors that enable, shape, and mediate these basic processes, while the rest of the chapters focus on practical applications of this knowledge to real-world settings and issues. The book provides a new look at memory development, including new topics such as spatial representation and spatial working, prospective memory, false memories, and memory and culture. This classic yet contemporary volume will appeal to senior undergraduate and graduate students of developmental and cognitive psychology, as well as to developmental psychologists who want a compendium of key topics in memory development.

BOOK EXCERPT:
I wrote this book for people who want to know the purpose of life, who want to know the purpose in life, and who want to live a life of exhilaration and abundance. The objective of this book is to collect the traces of truth we find in science, psychology, history, and spirituality and to answer the following three great questions of life: Who are we? What is reality? What are we doing here? The answers will help us understand the purpose of life and give us clarity on our purpose in life. It is necessary to know the truth, or a part of it, instead of following blind ambitions or live aimlessly. On our journey to find the purpose, we will learn the nature of the universe, mind, and life and then dive in to some concepts of metaphysics, which resonates with science. After a decade of research, experiment, introspection, and cognition, I have reasons to believe that we are born with a purpose in life, a legend to manifest. Life has a special meaning for each one of us. Once we realize our purpose, we can not only live a fulfilled and abundant life, but also reach our greatness.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Carol Grace's first book, "Reflections of a life well spent" was autobiographical in nature, while "More than a Memory" is more diverse, including poems of nature, poems written as a tribute to others, and poems of faith and inspiration. Mrs. Grace says this about her newest collection of poems: "More than a Memory" deals with everyday observations and the simple joy of letting words spill from my thoughts and onto paper. I have had a love affair with words all of my life. Poetry happens when thought becomes image, image becomes word, and words join together to form meaning that is often unique to each reader. It is my hope that "More Than a Memory" will trigger your own fond memories, and moreover, that you would be encouraged, if not challenged, to continue to make new memories, not letting the days get away from you." "More than a Memory" is not a book for the literary few, but for everyone who loves to hear a good story. Poetry has the ability to convey an entire story with an economy of words. You might find yourself reading the entire book in one sitting, but more likely you will read just a few poems at a time, luxuriating over the way the words make you feel. Although the subject matter may be bleak, the poem can still be beautiful because of word choice and the way it sounds when read aloud. Carol's poetry is written with the knowledge that there is power in the word, and we must learn to choose our words wisely. May the words in "More than a Memory" inspire you, bring a laugh or two, and comfort you.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Right at the time you and your spouse said, “I do” the process of oneness began. You and your mate are always in a state of becoming one. Dr. Smith has noticed four factors that can hinder the process of oneness. The first is the lack of communication i.e., you just do not speak the same language. Secondly is lack of social, intellectual, recreational, and sexual intimacy. Then there is the issue of finances, not necessarily the lack thereof but a disagreement as to how to utilize finances. Lastly is misunderstanding or misinterpreting your partner’s words and actions. This book will help couples navigate the waters of Becoming One.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Tabu Search (TS) and, more recently, Scatter Search (SS) have proved highly effective in solving a wide range of optimization problems, and have had a variety of applications in industry, science, and government. The goal of Metaheuristic Optimization via Memory and Evolution: Tabu Search and Scatter Search is to report original research on algorithms and applications of tabu search, scatter search or both, as well as variations and extensions having "adaptive memory programming" as a primary focus. Individual chapters identify useful new implementations or new ways to integrate and apply the principles of TS and SS, or that prove new theoretical results, or describe the successful application of these methods to real world problems.

BOOK EXCERPT:
What and how do people remember? Who controls the process of what we call cultural or social memory? What is forgotten and why? People's memories are not the same as history written in retrospect; they are malleable and an ongoing process of construction and reconstruction. Ancient Rome provided much of the cultural framework for early Christianity, and in both the role of memory was pervasive. Memory in Ancient Rome and Early Christianity presents perspectives from an international and interdisciplinary range of contributors on the literature, history, archaeology, and religion of a major world civilization, based on an informed engagement with important concepts and issues in memory studies. Moving beyond terms such as 'collective', 'social', and 'cultural memory' as standard tropes, the volume offers a selective exploration of the wealth of topics which comprise memory studies, and also features a contribution from a leading neuroscientist on the actual workings of the human memory. It is an importamt resource for anyone interested in Roman antiquity, the beginnings of Christianity, and the role of memory in history.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Provides students with a guide to human memory, its properties, theories about how it works, and how studying it can help us understand who we are and why we do the things that we do. For undergraduate and graduate courses in Human Memory. This book provides a very broad range of topics covering more territory than most books. In addition to some coverage of basic issues of human memory and cognition that are of interest to researchers in the field, the chapters also cover issues that will be relevant to students with a range of interests including those students interested in clinical, social, and developmental psychology, as well as those planning on going on to medical and law schools. The writing is aimed at talking directly to students (as opposed to talking down to them) in a clear and effective manner. Not too dense, but also not too conversational as well. This 2nd edition includes a series of exercises that allow the student to try out the concepts and principles conveyed in the chapters, or to use as the basis for exploring their own ideas.
