This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the IFIP TC 5, WG 8.4, 8.9, 12.9 International Cross-Domain Conference for Machine Learning and Knowledge Extraction, CD-MAKE 2018, held in Hamburg, Germany, in September 2018. The 25 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 45 submissions. The papers are clustered under the following topical sections: MAKE-Main Track, MAKE-Text, MAKE-Smart Factory, MAKE-Topology, and MAKE Explainable AI.

The BIRS Workshop “Advances in Interactive Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining in Complex and Big Data Sets” (15w2181), held in July 2015 in Banff, Canada, was dedicated to stimulating a cross-domain integrative machine-learning approach and appraisal of “hot topics” toward tackling the grand challenge of reaching a level of useful and useable computational intelligence with a focus on real-world problems, such as in the health domain. This encompasses learning from prior data, extracting and discovering knowledge, generalizing the results, fighting the curse of dimensionality, and ultimately disentangling the underlying explanatory factors in complex data, i.e., to make sense of data within the context of the application domain. The workshop aimed to contribute advancements in promising novel areas such as at the intersection of machine learning and topological data analysis. History has shown that most often the overlapping areas at intersections of seemingly disparate fields are key for the stimulation of new insights and further advances. This is particularly true for the extremely broad field of machine learning.

Text Mining is a convergent field of Data Mining which deals with extracting relevant and useful part of the information from unstructured text documents and storing them in the structured form. The research work on Information Extraction started in 1979, by a Ph.D thesis submitted at Yale University. But, Information Extraction has got its focus only in 1990s by a series of Message Understanding Conferences conducted by US defense group, DARPA. Information Extraction is preferred by researchers because of its ability to extract specific part of the information with its timely delivery to decision makers and end-users. Information Extraction focusses on extracting the entities and facts from technical websites. The technical web pages often exist in the semi-structured form, in which each and every part of the content is stored as a block of information. Existing Supervised and Unsupervised learning algorithms are reviewed and new algorithms are proposed and implemented for extracting facts and entities from technical websites.

Due to the Corona pandemic CD-MAKE 2020 was held as a virtual event.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the joint conference on Machine Learning and Knowledge Discovery in Databases: ECML PKDD 2008, held in Antwerp, Belgium, in September 2008. The 100 papers presented in two volumes, together with 5 invited talks, were carefully reviewed and selected from 521 submissions. In addition to the regular papers the volume contains 14 abstracts of papers appearing in full version in the Machine Learning Journal and the Knowledge Discovery and Databases Journal of Springer. The conference intends to provide an international forum for the discussion of the latest high quality research results in all areas related to machine learning and knowledge discovery in databases. The topics addressed are application of machine learning and data mining methods to real-world problems, particularly exploratory research that describes novel learning and mining tasks and applications requiring non-standard techniques.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th Pacific-Asia Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining, PAKDD 2003, held in Seoul, Korea in April/Mai 2003. The 38 revised full papers and 20 revised short papers presented together with two invited industrial contributions were carefully reviewed and selected from 215 submissions. The papers are presented in topical sections on stream mining, graph mining, clustering, text mining, Bayesian networks, association rules, semi-structured data mining, classification, data analysis, and feature selection.

The European Conference on Machine Learning (ECML) and the European Conference on Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases (PKDD) were jointly organized this year for the ?fth time in a row, after some years of mutual independence before. After Freiburg (2001), Helsinki (2002), Cavtat (2003) and Pisa (2004), Porto received the 16th edition of ECML and the 9th PKDD in October 3–7. Having the two conferences together seems to be working well: 585 di?erent paper submissions were received for both events, which maintains the high s- mission standard of last year. Of these, 335 were submitted to ECML only, 220 to PKDD only and 30 to both. Such a high volume of scienti?c work required a tremendous e?ort from Area Chairs, Program Committee members and some additional reviewers. On average, PC members had 10 papers to evaluate, and Area Chairs had 25 papers to decide upon. We managed to have 3 highly qua- ?edindependentreviewsperpaper(withveryfewexceptions)andoneadditional overall input from one of the Area Chairs. After the authors’ responses and the online discussions for many of the papers, we arrived at the ?nal selection of 40 regular papers for ECML and 35 for PKDD. Besides these, 32 others were accepted as short papers for ECML and 35 for PKDD. This represents a joint acceptance rate of around 13% for regular papers and 25% overall. We thank all involved for all the e?ort with reviewing and selection of papers. Besidesthecoretechnicalprogram,ECMLandPKDDhad6invitedspeakers, 10 workshops, 8 tutorials and a Knowledge Discovery Challenge.
