BOOK EXCERPT:
Drawing on the writings of the great philosophers, You Kant Make it Up sends the reader on thrilling, non-stop tour of their most outrageous and counter-intuitive conclusions. Harry Potter is real. Matter doesn't exist. Dan Brown is better than Shakespeare. All these statements stem from philosophy's greatest minds, from Plato to Nietzsche. What were they thinking? Overflowing with compelling arguments for the downright strange - many of which are hugely influential today - popular philosopher Gary Hayden shows that just because something is odd, doesn't mean that someone hasn't argued for it. Spanning ethics, logic, politics, sex and religion, this unconventional introduction to philosophy will challenge your assumptions, expand your horizons, infuriate, entertain and amuse you.

BOOK EXCERPT:
They Said I Wouldn't Make It. This is a book that needs to be read by all. It is full of everyday life situation. A book about one man's dreams and strggles to get custody of his ten siblings and reunite his family together again. This book is a pure inspiration to millions. I was always challenged by people that said that they were normal, telling me that I wouldn't make it in life because of how I was born. Not only is this book written from my heart, but it is also written through my pain and tears, triumphs and victories. It is my desire that kids that are born handicap would have the understanding that no on can make you handicap, if you chose not to be that handicap is a state of one's mind. It is my desire that the department of Social Services will remove the name 'foster' from kids. There is no such thing as a false child, all kids are real. For those that are single parents, I hope that you receive new strength. You can make it, don't give up. For the parents that have kids that were born handicap, if you want them normal, don't raise them handicap. For you that have lost your family through the system, don't give up, miracles still happen. For those of you that had been through sexual, physical, psychological, or any other abuse you can be healed. Many people's childhoods destroyed their adulthoods. For you this does not have to be so. Remember a quitter never wins, and a winner never quits. Last, those who say they can and those wh say they can not, are both correct.

BOOK EXCERPT:
It was quiet in my house, and I think I found the only flaw in having someone know about me. The quiet was deafening, I used to take comfort in the silence and now it was just this vast…nothingness. I logged onto my computer and stole a neighbors wireless. There were a bunch of people online I could talk to but the clicking of my keys didn’t really fill the room with any sort of comfort. Evan was off on a rant about his sixteen year old sister being pregnant, Ryan was regaling me with horrible math jokes, and Claire was saying little but usually gave me updates on what they were doing. Until finally I decided to go over there – just to get away from the black hole that was my house.

BOOK EXCERPT:
An October 2022 IndieNext pick ”[An] engaging and beautifully narrated quest for personal fulfillment and musical recognition...This is a fast-paced tale in which music and love always take center stage...A truly gifted musician, Price writes about her journey with refreshing candor.”—Kirkus, starred review ”Brutally honest...a vivid and poignant memoir.”—The Guardian Country music star Margo Price shares the story of her struggle to make it in an industry that preys on its ingenues while trying to move on from devastating personal tragedies. When Margo Price was nineteen years old, she dropped out of college and moved to Nashville to become a musician. She busked on the street, played open mics, and even threw out her TV so that she would do nothing but write songs. She met Jeremy Ivey, a fellow musician who would become her closest collaborator and her husband. But after working on their craft for more than a decade, Price and Ivey had no label, no band, and plenty of heartache. Maybe We’ll Make It is a memoir of loss, motherhood, and the search for artistic freedom in the midst of the agony experienced by so many aspiring musicians: bad gigs and long tours, rejection and sexual harassment, too much drinking and barely enough money to live on. Price, though, refused to break, and turned her lowest moments into the classic country songs that eventually comprised the debut album that launched her career. In the authentic voice hailed by Pitchfork for tackling "Steinbeck-sized issues with no-bullshit humility," Price shares the stories that became songs, and the small acts of love and camaraderie it takes to survive in a music industry that is often unkind to women. Now a Grammy-nominated “Best New Artist,” Price tells a love story of music, collaboration, and the struggle to build a career while trying to maintain her singular voice and style.

BOOK EXCERPT:
As jazz enters its second century it is reasserting itself as dynamic and relevant. Boston Globe jazz writer and Emerson College professor Bill Beuttler reveals new ways in which jazz is engaging with society through the vivid biographies and music of Jason Moran, Vijay Iyer, Rudresh Mahanthappa, The Bad Plus, Miguel Zenón, Anat Cohen, Robert Glasper, and Esperanza Spalding. These musicians are freely incorporating other genres of music into jazz—from classical (both western and Indian) to popular (hip-hop, R&B, rock, bluegrass, klezmer, Brazilian choro)—and other art forms as well (literature, film, photography, and other visual arts). This new generation of jazz is increasingly more international and is becoming more open to women as instrumentalists and bandleaders. Contemporary jazz is reasserting itself as a force for social change, prompted by developments such as the Black Lives Matter, #MeToo movements, and the election of Donald Trump.

In this inspirational autobiography, world-famous chef and owner of Red Rooster Harlem, Marcus Samuelsson tells his extraordinary story and encourages young people to embrace their mistakes and follow their dreams. Based on his highly praised adult memoir, Yes, Chef, this young adult edition includes an 8-page black-and-white family photo insert. Marcus Samuelsson’s life and his journey to the top of the food world have been anything but typical. Orphaned in Ethiopia, he was adopted by a loving couple in Sweden, where his new grandmother taught him to cook and inspired in him a lifelong passion for food. In time, that passion would lead him to train and cook in some of the finest, most demanding kitchens in Europe. Samuelsson’s talent and ambition eventually led him to fulfill his dream of opening his own restaurant in New York City: Red Rooster Harlem, a highly acclaimed, multicultural dining room, where presidents rub elbows with jazz musicians, aspiring artists, and bus drivers. A place where anyone can feel at home. "'Step up to the challenge; don't avoid it. Win or lose, take the shot.'
