BOOK EXCERPT:

Ten years on from their first book, Evangelism: Which way now? which has become a valuable and much recommended resource, Mark Ireland and Mike Booker aim to take people a step further. Making New Disciples offers a practical approach, based on careful theological reflection and years of hands-on experience in local church leadership, theological education and the national church. The book is not so much a Which? guide to the available resources, as a wrestling with the paradoxes of evangelism in a changing world, backed up with plenty of stories and specific examples.

The Meaning Of Make Disciples In The Broader Context Of The Gospel Of Matthew

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Students of the Bible are generally comfortable with their understanding of the command “make disciples” (Matt 28:19). Indeed, most of them would argue that the Gospel writer, Matthew, spells out very clearly the meaning of the term in the Great Commission (Matt 28:16–20) by utilizing three key words, viz., “go[ing],” “baptizing,” and “teaching.” This point of view is the result of centuries of scholarly opinion that has looked primarily, if not solely, to these three adjacent participles of “make disciples” (Matt 28:19), and not to the entire Gospel of Matthew, for the meaning of the command. This book does not suggest that “going,” “baptizing,” and “teaching” are not to be considered in determining the essence of Christian disciple-making. Rather, it contends that the three terms should not be our only source of meaning. This problem is tackled herein by demonstrating that Matthew establishes a framework within the Great Commission itself that points to a fuller meaning of “make disciples” in the broader context of his Gospel, and that the Gospel writer expects his reader to draw on his entire Gospel to grasp the full meaning of this important command.

Read this book and catch a new imagination for what it means to be human.” (Tim Suttle, pastor and author of Shrink: Faithful Ministry in a Church-Growth Culture) A Note from the Author: I will never forget the moment I saw Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton: An American Musical on Broadway. I walked out of the Richard Rogers Theatre that night knowing that I had seen a ground-breaking and brilliant Broadway musical. I also knew that Hamilton somehow become for me a deeply spiritual experience. I soon discovered that I was not the only one. I read so many reviews and watched so many interviews where people spoke of Hamilton as a life changing experience. Rosie O’Donnell even went so far as to call it “medicine that I need for my soul. It is vital to me; it feels like going to church.” In writing this book, I have come to see Hamilton as a story that will transform our lives. A story that teaches us about grace, shame, forgiveness, and despair. A story that invites us into the struggle for equality and challenges us to partner with God in his ultimate goal of bringing redemption to His creation. I pray that this story, which intersects insights from the musical, the lives of Alexander and Eliza Hamilton, and the story of Scripture, might transform your life as well.
