This edited volume revisits developments in the field of media education and media studies at a time when society is experiencing a ubiquitous networked, digital media environment. Rapid advances in media and communication technologies and the accompanying developments in social, cultural, political, and economic realms pose unexpected challenges to the curricula of long-established media and communication schools. As opposed to rigidly structured nation-based mass media systems of the past century, the new global media sphere celebrates the breaking down of borders – whether spatial, cultural or social. Today, in the second half of the second decade of the 21st century, this problem translates into what, and how to teach students of media, who in all likelihood, are more adept media consumers and producers, than their teachers. In a region where educational institutions and educators don’t transform as fast as media technologies do, there is a need to problematize, and to reflect upon the situation. This edited volume examines critical issues related to media studies at local institutions of higher learning, and includes a sampling of research charting new directions in local media scholarship. Contributions to this edited volume reflect the shared concerns of media educators and researchers in Malaysia and two neighboring countries, Indonesia and Thailand. Dunia Digital Pengajian Alam Melayu merupakan kupasan dan perbincangan mengenai pembangunan portal Pengajian Alam Melayu di Institut Alam dan Tamadun Melayu (ATMA) dan The Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies, (KITLV). ATMA telah membangunkan Portal Malaycivilization.com dan KITLV pula membangunkan Portal KITLV. Kedua-dua portal ini menyediakan akses kepada pengguna bagi mendapatkan bahan rujukan dan maklumat yang berkait dengan Pengajian Alam Melayu. Pengetahuan dan pemahaman terhadap Tamadun Melayu, Tamadun Belanda dan sejarah pembangunan intelektual di antara kedua-dua tamadun tersebut, dan Pengajian Alam Melayu telah memberikan inspirasi berguna dalam melihat proses pembangunan portal tersebut. Analisis perbandingan dilakukan melalui aspek sosiologikal dan teknikal.. Kedua-dua analisis ini juga membuka ruang yang luas dalam memahami teknik dan strategi yang digunakan oleh ATMA dan KITLV untuk membangunkan portal. Secara umumnya buku ini menyatukan kembali bidang sains dan kemanusiaan yang terpisah dan bergerak bersendirian. Kedua-dua bidang ini telah menyumbang kepada pelbagai aspek kehidupan sama ada yang dapat dilihat secara fizikal atau yang berkait dengan masyarakat. Melalui buku ini, kedua-dua bidang tersebut digunakan sebagai idea utama untuk melihat Pengajian Alam Melayu di alam siber melalui pembangunan portal. Inilah sebenarnya yang menjadi tunjang kepada penulisan buku ini. Penulis juga berhasrat untuk mengembalikan semula zaman kegemilangan falsafah tabii yang suatu ketika dahulu menjadi medium utama untuk memahami manusia dan alam sekitarnya. Tanpa disangka, inisiatif untuk mengkaji dan memahami kedua-dua portal ini berdasarkan aspek sosiologikal dan teknikal telah menghasilkan beberapa penemuan berasaskan aspek kemanusiaan, sains sosial, sains komputer dan teknologi maklumat. Penemuan ini juga dilihat sebagai suatu inisiatif permulaan untuk menghidupkan kembali asas utama kepada sains dan kemanusiaan iaitu falsafah tabii.

The potential economic growth of these emerging markets has prompted a need to understand their dynamics, business institutions and educational systems. Many American universities, for example, have responded to the demand of their students and business partners by educating them about the exciting opportunities and lurking threats in these industrializing economies. This book contains multiple chapters designed to educate American students about the curricular innovations and course development occurring in emerging markets.

Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) approaches are becoming increasingly central to visions of decarbonizing national economies. The past few years have seen an increasing number of countries committed to net-zero targets, preceded by a surge of modelled 1.5°C scenarios envisioning large-scale future CDR deployment. The prospect of CDR deployment raises new complex socio-ecological challenges, and presents new deep uncertainties. These complexities, challenges and uncertainties cannot be investigated using solely the techno-economic modelling and environmental risk-assessment methods that currently dominate the construction of policy-relevant knowledge on CDR. Social sciences and the humanities perspectives on CDR are often restricted to instrumental tasks such as investigating public acceptance, overcoming social resistance or supporting the development of integrated assessment models. There is a need for more diverse investigations of CDR which include not only environmental and techno-economic dimensions, but also explore key societal complexities, challenges and uncertainties. Against this backdrop, we call for submissions on CDR stemming from perspectives within the social sciences and humanities. We encourage novel empirical and theoretical contributions on: – CDR-related policy design or analyses of recent policy developments at sub-national, national and international levels of governance, e.g., in context of climate targets and strategies, climate tipping points, mitigation deterrence or societal transformations.

Neuroscience contributes to the basic understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying human development and learning. Educational neuroscience is an interdisciplinary research field that seeks to translate research findings on neural mechanisms of learning to educational practice and policy and to understand the effects of education on the brain. It is an emerging multidisciplinary field where the aim is to link basic research in neuroscience, psychology, and cognitive science, with educational technology. Educational neuroscience is often associated with the ‘science’ of learning and encompasses a broad range of scientific disciplines, from basic neuroscience to cognitive psychology to computer science to social theory. It is an interdisciplinary research field that seeks to translate research findings on neural mechanisms of learning to educational practice and policy and to understand the effects of education on the brain. Neuroscience research usually focuses only on learning, but there is a developing subfield within neuroscience called “Mind, Brain and Education” (MBE) that attempts to link research with teaching. MBE researchers consider how to take advantage of the natural human attention span, how to use studies about memory systems to inform lesson planning, and how to use research on the role of emotions in learning. In neuroscience research, progress has been extraordinary, including advances in both understanding and technology. Scientists from a wide range of disciplines are being attracted to the challenge of understanding the brain. In spite of discoveries regarding the structure of the brain, we still do not understand how the nervous system allows us to see, hear, learn, remember, and plan certain actions. Educators and schools around the globe are increasingly relying on the knowledge, techniques, and programs developed based on a new understanding of how our brains work. This knowledge is being applied to the classroom. A growing amount of attention is being paid to neuroscience and how the results of empirical research may be used to help individuals learn more effectively.
