Mandula

BOOK EXCERPT:

People often ask about the title of this book and it doesn’t reveal too much about what is within these pages to explain why I chose it. Mandula is derived from ‘mandorla’, which is Italian not only for almond, but also for the almond-shaped frame often seen surrounding icons in churches. I have it tattood on my arm and it is also on the cover of this book. The shape, also known as piscis vesica (Latin for the bladder of a fish) is created by the perfectly balanced intersection of two circles. Often, one signifies heaven and the other earth, but it can mean many things. Where the circles meet, such as when Christ came down to be among us, a mandorla is said to be created. All good art finds the intersection between heaven and earth and this is what I sensed on my journey through this book. The great elation of heaven goes hand in hand with the crushing suffering that is life on earth so much of the time. And from this combination emerges something rich and at times beautiful. The divine spark, but also the highs and lows of life. Such is the bipolar world we live in.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Author of the acclaimed Tough Draw (which Arthur Ashe called "one of the best books on professional tennis I've ever read"), Eliot Berry returns to the graceful, high-stakes game of world-class tennis to share his insights on what it takes to be a winner. Berry follows today's top players, as well as a select few juniors on the rise, through the major worldwide tournaments on all surfaces--from the clay courts of the Orange Bowl to the grass of Wimbledon to the hardcourts of the U.S. Open and beyond. The author's talent for finding the most exciting battles, often far from the glare of center court, is evident in gripping play-by-play descriptions. Berry also reexamines yesterday's stars--Rod Laver, Ken Rosewall, Roy Emerson, John McEnroe, Martina Navratilova, and other greats of the game, including a fascinating portrait of the late Fred Perry that stands as a poignant testament to a vanished era. Eliot Berry, dubbed "a jock with a brain" by Inside Tennis magazine, views the sport within the context of its unique history to show why certain athletes succeed, how to identify tomorrow's winners, and why time at the top is fleeting, even for today's greatest champions. The author's trademark blend of insightful interviews and vivid courtside commentary opens the door to a world most tennis enthusiasts can never enter; his privileged access to the stars and their coaches and families--earned through the critical success of Tough Draw--yields a rare glimpse of world-class professional tennis as it is really lived and played. Topspin is a stunning tribute to the game, its past masters and present stars--a book for all tennis fans and players.

Madeleine Albright

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The definitive biography of one of the most admired women in America. She was born Maria Jana Korbelova in Prague just before the outbreak of World War II, the first child of Czech Jewish parents. Almost sixty years later Madeleine Korbel Albright was sworn in as the U.S. Secretary of State, the first woman to hold the position. Here is the story of her dramatic life and rise to power in this meticulously researched biography that expands on the noteworthy research by Washington Post reporter Michael Dobbs who, in 1997, first pieced together the incredible and nearly lost history of Albright's early life. At the age of two, Madeleine was saved from almost certain death by being whisked to freedom after Hitler's invasion. More than two dozen close relatives died in Nazi camps. In an attempt to protect themselves and their family from further persecution, her parents kept silent about their Jewish roots, raising their children as Catholics. Dobbs traces Albright's progress from a European ghetto to the corridors of power in Washington. He shows how Albright's life has been shaped by the great events of our times: the rise and fall of Nazism and communism, the Holocaust, the women's movement, and America's ascent to superpower status. Madeleine Albright is a tragic but ultimately triumphant tale of a woman's struggle against adversity that reflects the experience of millions of American immigrants.

Seasons Of Her Life

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

When Madeleine Korbel Albright was sworn in as secretary of state in January 1997, she made headlines around the world. She was the first woman to rise to the top tier of American government and had a reputation for defining foreign policy in blunt one-liners that voters could understand. When her Jewish heritage was disclosed, people were intrigued by her personal story and wondered how it was possible -- if it were possible -- that she truly could have been ignorant of her past. Veteran Time magazine correspondent Ann Blackman has written the first comprehensive biography of Madeleine Albright. The book reveals a life of enormous texture -- a lonely, peripatetic childhood in war-ravaged Europe; two harrowing escapes from her homeland, once from the Nazis, then from the Communists; her arrival in America; Madeleine's unhappiness as a teenager in Denver, always the outsider, the little refugee; her marriage into an old American newspaper family with great wealth. When, after twenty-three years, the marriage failed, Albright was devastated. But in many ways, divorce liberated her to pursue a lifelong interest in government and international affairs. From Senator Edmund S. Muskie's office to President Carter's White House to a professorship at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service, Albright gained experience and contacts. As a foreign affairs advisor to Democratic vice-presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro and, later, presidential candidate Michael Dukakis, Albright positioned herself to return to government as President Clinton's ambassador to the United Nations and eventually to claim her ultimate prize -- the office of secretary of state. With both insight and compassion, Blackman shows how the changing cultural mores of the last four decades affected Albright and other women of her generation: the self-doubt she experienced when, as a young mother in an era when real mothers didn't work, she decided to take a job on Capitol Hill; the problems she faced as a female professor who was not always taken seriously in the white man's world of foreign policy; the psychological transformation from spending most of her professional life as a staffer who wrote talking points for others to becoming a woman of consequence in her own right; the ups and downs of an ambitious, driven woman who still carries her share of insecurities, now concealed by a veneer of power and celebrity. In writing this landmark book, Blackman drew on archival material in the United States, Britain, and the Czech Republic, as well as interviews with almost two hundred friends and colleagues of Albright and her family, including President Clinton, Czech Republic President Václav Havel, and U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, She also spent many hours with Albright herself who, feet up in her Georgetown living room, offered startlingly frank and poignant comments on her life, past and present. The book is enhanced with twenty-five photos, many from the Secretary's personal collection.

England S Other Countrymen

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Tudor period remains a source of timeless fascination, with endless novels, TV programmes and films depicting the period in myriad ways. And yet our image of the Tudor era remains overwhelmingly white. This ground-breaking and provocative new book seeks to redress the balance: revealing not only how black presence in Tudor England was far greater than has previously been recognised, but that Tudor conceptions of race were far more complex than we have been led to believe. Onyeka Nubia's original research shows that Tudors from many walks of life regularly interacted with people of African descent, both at home and abroad, revealing a genuine pragmatism towards race and acceptance of difference. Nubia also rejects the influence of the 'Curse of Ham' myth on Tudor thinking, persuasively arguing that many of the ideas associated with modern racism are in fact relatively recent developments. England's Other Countrymen is a bravura and eloquent forgotten history of diversity and cultural exchange, and casts a new light on our own attitudes towards race.
