1. A man alone is a Sceptic Put him in a group and he becomes Gullible. 2. Poverty is power. If the poor are with you never let them go and never let them be rich. 3. If you see a shoe shinier than yours then lick it. This will bring more shine to your own shoe. These three may very well be called the three laws of Politics.

BOOK EXCERPT:
"The study concludes that there is scope for further development of the agricultural economy at Tshiombo but this will require comprehensive reform of existing state services such as tractor ploughing and agricultural extension. More flexible partnerships between the state and non-state organisations, including private entrepreneurs, individual farmers and the struggling Tshiombo Co-operative in the provision of credit, marketing and transport services are also identified as areas suitable for development. Constraints of land, capital and household labour suggest that in most cases agriculture is likely to remain supplementary to income obtained from the non-farm economy, but can be a valuable source of food and an important safety-net in times of crisis."--BOOK JACKET.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Calypso, with its diverse cultural heritage, was the most significant Caribbean musical form from World War I to Trinidad and Tobago Independence in 1962. Though wildly popular in mid-1950s America, Calypso--along with other music from "the island of the hummingbird"--has been largely neglected or forgotten. This first-ever discography of the first 50 years of Trinidadian music includes all the major artists, as well as many obscure performers. Chronological entries for 78 rpm recordings give bibliographical references, periodicals, websites and the recording locations. Rare field recordings are cataloged for the first time, including East Indian and Muslim community performances and Shango and Voodoo rites. Appendices give 10-inch LP (78 rpm), 12-inch LP (33 1/3 rpm), extended play (ep) and 7-inch single (45) listings. Non-commercial field recordings, radio broadcasts and initially unissued sessions also are listed. The influence of Trinidadian music on film, and the "Calypso craze" are discussed. Audio sources are provided. Indexes list individual artists and groups, recording titles and labels.

This collection of poems is meant to be read over a cup of coffee on a table for two. But really they can be read anywhere and anytime if only you would read them. They speak of have-not times when words refuse to brew. They speak of love and sorrow, raindrops and the memory trail – and the dreams forever taboo. But remember – the poems are not for everyone; they are for friends alone.

BOOK EXCERPT:
From the powerful opening words of the Kumulipo to the propulsive rhymes of contemporary slam poetry, Hapai na Leo celebrates a diverse range of voices that explore, carry, and regenerate Hawaiian culture. Hapai na Leo is a literary companion to Malcolm Naea Chun¿s historical and philosophical works, the Ka Wana series, published by the Curriculum Research & Development Group, and No Na Mamo, published by the University of Hawai'i Press. This anthology responds to Chun¿s work with a wide range of voices and perspectives far-ranging in style, form, and generation. They address broad, yet specific, topics: sovereignty and power; economic and social relationships; identity and spirituality. While these perspectives represent particular stories and places, they remind us that people everywhere define themselves in ways large and small, public and private, individual and communal.
