BOOK EXCERPT:
This book covers the remarkable development of the chemistry and applications of Mannich bases within the last 30 years. It provides an updated and comprehensive look at these compounds-compounds identified at the beginning of the century. Particular emphasis is placed on the versatile chemistry of Mannich bases. Synthesis and reactions of Mannich bases are systematically treated in the first two chapters, which include a thorough review of the most recent advances on the topic. Chapters 3 and 4 are devoted to the macromolecular chemistry and the chemistry of natural compounds, two emerging areas of application of the chemistry of Mannich bases. Chapter 5 deals with structure/property relationships that enable the production of tailor-made molecular structures suited to different practical applications. A survey of the main uses of individual Mannich bases according to the type of industrial branch is also reported.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The tetracyclines have an illustrious history as therapeutic agents which dates back over half a century. Initially discovered as an antibiotic in 1947, the four ringed molecule has captured the fancy of chemists and biologists over the ensuing decades. Of further interest, as described in the chapter by George Armelagos, tetracyclines were already part of earlier cultures, 1500-1700 years ago, as revealed in traces of drug found in Sudanese Nubian mummies. The diversity of chapters which this book presents to the reader should illus trate the many disciplines which have examined and seen benefits from these fascinating natural molecules. From antibacterial to anti-inflammatory to anti autoimmunity to gene regulation, tetracyclines have been modified and redesigned for various novel properties. Some have called this molecule a biol ogist's dream because of its versatility, but others have seen it as a chemist's nightmare because of the synthetic chemistry challenges and "chameleon-like" properties (see the chapter by S. Schneider).

BOOK EXCERPT:
Recent Applications of Selected Name Reactions in the Total Synthesis of Alkaloids includes comprehensive coverage of name reactions in the synthesis of alkaloids. This book highlights the synthesis of various alkaloids using special name reactions including the Diels-Alder, Friedel-Crafts, Heck, Mannich, Pauson-Khand, Pictet-Spengler, Sonogashira and Suzuki reactions. In this book, some selected name reactions in the total synthesis of alkaloids are covered, as they can be used as the key step/steps in the synthesis of different alkaloids exhibiting various biological activities. All chapters include an introduction, history and mechanism of the name reaction, and present the origin of the natural product and its known biological activities. The pathway to total synthesis is visually illustrated, and the focus is on the step in which a name reaction is applied. Chemists working in the area of synthetic organic chemistry will find this reference useful, as well as those working to develop novel methodologies for the synthesis of natural products in both academia and industry. This book is also beneficial to biologists, pharmacists and botanists. - Includes an introduction of alkaloids, their origins and biological properties - Features the applications of special name reactions as the key step in the total synthesis of featured alkaloids - Covers the pathway for the synthesis of alkaloids from commercially available or easily accessible starting materials by using at least one name reaction to achieve the desired target products

BOOK EXCERPT:
Epoxy resins have been commercially available for about 45 years and now have many major industrial applications, especially where technical advantages warrant their somewhat higher costs. The chemistry of these resins is fascinating and has attracted study by many very able scientists. The technological applications of the epoxy resins are very demanding and there are many new developments each year. The aims of the present book are to present in a compact form both theoretical and practical information that will assist in the study, research and innovations in the field of epoxy resin science and technology. The literature on epoxy resins is so vast that it is not possible to be encyclopaedic and that is not the function of the present text. It is the editor's hope that the selection of topics discussed will provide an up-to-date survey. There is some overlap in the chapters but this is minimal and so each chapter is essentially self contained. As with all chemicals there are toxicological and other hazards. These are not dealt with in this text since a little knowledge can be dangerous, but material supplied can provide information regarding any safety precautions that may be necessary. However, often these precautions are not onerous and epoxy resins, or more specifically the hardeners, can be handled readily. It is hoped that this text will provide an up-to-date outline of the science and technology of epoxy resins and stimulate further research into unsolved problems and assist further technological developments.
