This seventh volume in The Cambridge History of Africa examines the period 1905-40 in African history.

Over the past ten years the attention given in British universities to the study of southern Africa has grown rapidly. In 1969 a symposium held under the auspices of the African Studies Association of the United Kingdom (ASAUK) to review the state of current work on southern Africa in Britain and in Africa itself revealed the diversity of research in progress, as well as practical and political problems involved in such research.

This work lists and describes manuscripts - in African and Western languages - relating to Africa south of the Sahara held in public and private collections in the British Isles. Arrangement of entries is first by country, and within each country alphabetical by town and name of repository.

The Chagga and the Meru are related peoples living on the rich banana-grove and coffee-plantation slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru in Northern Tanzania. While the literature on the Chagga is overwhelmingly large little is generally available on the Meru. This volume, originally published in 1977, provided for the first time a concise, comprehensive and well-documented overview of Chagga society, history and cosmology, drawing not only on the authors’ field work but on the works of the prolific Germans: Gutmann, Raum and others. It also detail original research and uses reports of the famous Meru Land Case to illuminate Meru society and economy and their adjustment in turn to Arusha, German and British colonial, and independent government influences.
