Knowledge management has been widely applied to various industries as a good strategy to help improve firms’ performance. As globalisation accelerates and international trade increases more and more, maritime transport operations have become one of the vitalest industries to receive large attention from international managers. This is because the managers have perceived that the maritime transport system is an integrated entity within the global logistics and supply chain, and it should be therefore managed in the most efficient and effective ways possible, as an organic body within a global logistics system. Taking this approach, this book examines how maritime transport operators – such as shipping companies, port terminal operators and freight forwarders – could successfully play a role within the global logistics flow wherein they are embedded by improving their logistic value, i.e. maritime logistics value. Logistic companies worldwide are facing new challenges in the next decade. Some important challenges and trends of environmental friendly operations in maritime logistics are outlined. The general trends entail, among others, the reduction of CO2/SOx/NOx, the design of more ecological shipping vessels, protect and enhance human health, recycle, re-use and remanufacture etc. A sustainable supply chain donate sustainable development by simultaneously delivering economic, social and environmental benefits – or what has been termed “ the triple bottom line”. A large number of firms have reconfigured their sustainable supply chains to enhance end-customer value and competitive advantage. Implications caused by maritime sector or shipping companies are discussed and illustrated by some examples. A framework of “A.P. Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: A, Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh, course: Maritime Logistics and Supply Chain Management, language: English, abstract: Several trends, such as globalisation, the growth of shipping alliances, the growing size of vessels and the development of intermodal transportation, have caused competition amongst ports and terminals to become intense (Song, 2002, 2003, 2004; Wortelboer-Van Donselaara and Kolkmana, 2010; Lee and Song, 2007). Nowadays, a port cannot maintain a monopoly status as it did in the past. To adapt to increasing competition, ports and terminals are forced to implement new strategies (Song, 2004). One approach to remain competitive in the changing business environment is the implementation of collaborative initiatives between ports. By collaborating with other ports and terminals, benefits can be obtained that cannot be achieved alone. Due to this relatively new development, literature regarding collaborative practices within the port industry is quite rare. Detailed investigations regarding the drivers, benefits, barriers and facilitators are, with a few exceptions, completely absent. In addition, Song (2004) mentioned in his paper of port co-opetition, that a questionnaire survey or interview-based research can overcome his content-analysis-based research and help to build a solid theory. Due to the identified research gap, this dissertation aims to make a contribution to the field of horizontal collaboration between ports and terminals.

Distance Education is expanding at a faster rate cutting across national and regional boundaries. With the advent and spread of information and communication technology (ICT), distance education has embarked on a path of collaboration, networking and globalization. Quality and accreditation of distance learning programmes and experiences have become highly significant in the ICT-enabled education system. This edited book is a compilation of selected papers submitted for the International Conference 2005 of International Council for Distance Education (ICDE). The papers are grouped into four major themes internationalisation: collaboration and networking; ICT-enabled distance education; quality assurance; and distance education for development. Covering these four major themes, the selected papers give an overview of the present scenario of open and distance learning the world over.
