BOOK EXCERPT:

Market Evolution: Competition and Cooperation is a selection of papers presented at the recent meeting of the European Association of Research in Industrial Economics (EARIE). The volume brings together twenty high-quality papers reflecting frontier research in modern industrial organization. The contributions cover a broad spectrum of increasing theoretical, empirical and policy issues, including analyses of the nature of the firm, product differentiation, research and development, strategic alliances, information sharing in the banking sector, exchange rate pass-through in international competition, labor unionization and product rivalry, buyer-supplier bargaining, multimarket competition and related entry, entry and exit processes, multinational enterprises in the Third World, European integration and the restructuring of Eastern Europe. From a theoretical perspective, many chapters apply game theory to the analysis of firm behaviors and market competition. Moreover, a large number of the studies contain a significant empirical part, mainly by employing econometric techniques, to test the hypotheses derived from modern industrial organization theories. Data from Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, the United Kingdom and the European Union are presented and analyzed.

Market Evolution In Developing Countries

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Markets in Third World countries are growing rapidly and in the next several decades will offer tremendous business opportunities. Firms aspiring to be a part of this growth must establish their presence in these markets today or lose the opportunity forever. Market Evolution in Developing Countries illustrates how these markets are likely to evolve as mass markets along the lines of advanced nations and examines conditions that affect this evolution. The author develops a model of market evolution based on a general overview of all evolving markets which is then applied and thoroughly discussed with reference to India, a burgeoning market of some 200 million people. Through a conceptual framework of market evolution, this groundbreaking book describes how markets at various stages of development offer different opportunities and thus require different strategies for success. Author Jain outlines strategic moves that American businesses may make to capitalize on such opportunities. He also covers information on policy initiatives developing countries themselves can take to help in the smooth evolution of their markets and specific steps leaders of these countries may take to enable greater growth in their markets. While Market Evolution in Developing Countries uses India as a case study, the strategies for doing business successfully there are equally relevant and easily adaptable for use in other developing countries. Some of the many topics addressed include India’s government and politics, corporate environment, international competitiveness, and changing market behavior, as well as U.S. direct investment in India, Indo-U.S. business relations, and political-legal differences between the U.S. and India. This informative guide also contains a brief historical overview of India, a profile of a middle-class Indian family, and a handy section of cultural tips and other advice for business persons traveling to India to help them cope with business negotiations there. In a readable style, this book provides comprehensive information for all business professionals interested in the vast opportunities available in many Third World countries. Market Evolution in Developing Countries is ideal for international business executives and consultants who wish to review opportunities in these countries and learn how to take advantage of them effectively. It is a basic resource on economic opportunities in developing countries.

The Space Transportation Market Evolution Or Revolution

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

M. Rycroft, FacultyMember, InternationalSpaceUniversity e-mail:Rycroft@isu.isunet.edu "The Space Transportation Market: Evolution or Revolution?" was the question which was the focus for the papers presented, and also the Panel Discussions, at the fifth annual Symposium organised by the International Space University. Held in Strasbourg, France, for three lively days at the end of May 2000, the Symposium brought together representatives of the developers, providers and operators of space transportation systems, of regulatory bodies, and of users of the space transportation infrastructure in many fields, as well as experts in policy and market analysis. From the papers published here, it is clear that today's answer to the question tends more towards evolution than to revolution. The space launch industry is still not a fully mature one, and is still reliant on at least partial funding by governments. Better cooperation is essential between governments, launch providers, satellite builders and satellite operators in order to reduce the problems which the space transportation market faces today.

Investment Under Uncertainty Coalition Spillovers And Market Evolution In A Game Theoretic Perspective

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Two crucial aspects of economic reality are uncertainty and dynamics. In this book, new models and techniques are developed to analyse economic dynamics in an uncertain environment. In the first part, investment decisions of firms are analysed in a framework where imperfect information regarding the investment's profitability is obtained randomly over time. In the second part, a new class of cooperative games, spillover games, is developed and applied to a particular investment problem under uncertainty: mergers. In the third part, the effect of bounded rationality on market evolution is analysed for oligopolistic competition and incomplete financial markets.

Labour Market Evolution

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

How have modern labour markets developed? Both labour economists and economic historians agree that it is necessary to look at labour markets in their historical context. Labour Market Evolution does just this. The contributors examine the operation and development of labour markets in Western Europe and North America since 1500. They address the key questions in this complicated process using new quantitative evidence. First, how closely connected were geographically distant labour markets? Second, how flexible were markets in the past - did wages change in response to demand shocks? Did workers move across space and occupations in response to cyclical or seasonal conditions. Third, were relationships between employees and employers short-term or long-term? Why did relationships change, and what were the implications for the flexibility and integration of markets? In examining these factors, this volume draws on modern labour economic theory and up-to-date quantitative techniques to show how current traditions and systems have evolved.
