More than one person has joked over the years that Evangelical believers do not have an ecclesiology. In one sense, that is absurd: Evangelical churches (especially if you include Pentecostals in that group) are some of the fastest-growing, most vibrant churches in the world. Evangelicals are proclaiming the gospel, praising the Lord, reading the Bible, and loving the poor. But there is a case to be made that the Evangelical devotion to the mission of the church has left Evangelicals with little time to reflect on the church itself. In this collection of essays, first given at annual meetings of the Evangelical Theological Society, the authors take time to reflect on the nature of the church in an Evangelical context, asking after the way in which it is one, holy, catholic, and apostolic.

This is a nontraditional story of the people of an Episcopal parish that was born in center city Philadelphia in 1847 not many decades after the American Episcopal Church broke with the Church of England. By distinct choice, Saint Marks founders built an Anglican church, feeling that the Church of England journeyed too far from its Anglo-Catholic roots. These Victorian-era people and those who followed them gave magnificent gifts abundantly to their church. But they also built, operated, and staffed missions, chapels, and churches in Philadelphia and the nation. They could, did, and still do have an impact beyond their parish. This is their story.

Three important events occurred in Chicago in the landmark year of 1893. First was the Chicago World's Fair, second was the founding of Sears Roebuck and Co., and third was the establishment of St. Mark Methodist Episcopal Church, initially located in a storefront on State Street in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood. After 125 years, only St. Mark Church is alive and flourishing. Rev. S.C. Goosley was invited to come to Chicago for the purpose of developing a Methodist presence in the African American community. In 1907, St. Mark moved to Fiftieth Street and Wabash Avenue, and the congregation worshipped there until 1959. The church moved to its present location on Chicago's far South Side. Being the largest African American United Methodist congregation in the region, St. Mark parishioners humbly stand on the strong shoulders of their ancestors as they spread the word of the healing gospel to the community.

Since the book of Revelation was written, millions of sincere Christians have shown great interest in knowing the true interpretation of the passage registered in verses 16 to 18 of the 13th chapter of Revelation. It is said in that passage that a mark will be placed on the right hand or forehead of the inhabitants of the world. Due to erroneous interpretations, there are millions of people today that are very worried because they would not be able, according to the Scripture, to buy or sell unless they submit themselves to the authority inspired and directed by Satan.
