Dissident Authorship in Mozambique: the Case of António Quadros is the first monograph on the literary works of the pennames of Portuguese poet and painter António Quadros (1933-1994). The book uses Quadros's quirky case-- a Portuguese man who lived in colonial and post-independence Mozambique, where he published poetry and prose under three pennames--João Pedro Grabato Dias, Frey Ioannes Garabatus, and Mutimati Barnabé Joãoto--to examine the question of what it means to be an author in Mozambique and how authorship changed after the end of Portuguese colonial rule. Quadros's engagement with the question of the authors' place and function in authoritarian contexts stands as a fruitful counterpoint to the influential essays by Roland Barthes ('The Death of the Author', 1968) and Michel Foucault ('What is an Author?', 1969), the publication of which coincided with Quadros's literary début in 1968. Quadros's interesting and useful contributions to the question of Mozambican authorship are analysed in historical context and read alongside postcolonial and decolonial theory. Tom Stennett address the political implications of Barthes's and Foucault's erasure of authorial identity and their respective challenges to authorial authority. He makes the case for an approach to the question of authorship that takes into account the anonymous agents and institutions--such as editors, political parties and the State--that are involved in the conferring of authority onto certain authors and readers. In contrast to much extant scholarship on Mozambican authorship, which has tended to focus on questions related to identity and canonicity, Dissident Authorship addresses these themes as well as those of readership, authority, power, and representation.

This book presents a re-engagement with oral histories as a way of documenting, understanding, and discussing experiences of work and economic life in Africa under neoliberal capitalism. It draws on seven case studies in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Uganda, and South Sudan, from the late 1980s to the present, to offer a critical analysis of neoliberal transformations and realities at the incisive level of peoples’ biographies. The last few decades have witnessed unprecedented changes in the working lives of people across the African continent. Oral historical accounts of working lives can offer unique and productive insights into these changes by allowing analyses of neoliberalism that focuses on personal experiences over the longue durée. Yet, there has been a surprising dearth of oral histories of work since the emergence of neoliberalism in the 1980s. Compared to scholarship published more than half a century ago, there has been a decline in the use of oral histories to explore experiences of living and working under capitalism. By grounding analysis in biographical details, histories, and dynamics, the chapters in this book seek better understandings of the wider life contexts, challenges, and circumstances in which people’s ‘agency’ emerges, unfolds, gains traction, and gets (re)shaped; and a better grasp of the multiple, entangled layers and temporalities of life and work in capitalist Africa. Based on ethnographic research and her experiences growing up in Brazil, the book tells the stories of communities in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Belo Horizonte-two quilombos, two Indigenous movements, and a favela-to unravel the continuities and discontinuities of Brazil's settler colonial structure. As Poets argues, settler colonialism is renewed through expectations of Indigenous and quilombola authenticity as well as through militarization, incarceration, genocide, and marginalization that continuously attempt to dispossess and eliminate Black and Indigenous peoples from the political landscape, including in its urban centers. Placing these dynamics under one analytic lens, Poets navigates how the dependent settler capitalist state has related to different Indigenous and Black groups with distinct yet interrelated effects. She thereby challenges the still-common separation of Black and Indigenous politics and peoples in policy, activism, and scholarship.
