Massive Intense Amounts Of Psychotherapy

BOOK EXCERPT:

While in Skagit County Jail in 2011, I was writing songs and the cops (having said before they needed me to be done with that) planted a letter within my personal belongings and I saw it when I got my folder back days later. The letter said, You will need to ask the deputy to see your police reports. When I showed it to the deputy, he said, We don't use those. I really think that was their way of making me stop writing songs and making art that depicts the system as failing and society as wrong. After finishing this poem, the deputy came by and went Hmph when he saw me writing! Well, here goes nothing.

Elements Of Psychology

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

"This treatise is intended primarily for those who have not already studied psychology, and now propose to give it thoughtful attention. It is therefore elementary, as its title indicates, and is introductory to the abundant and growing literature of the science. Though no previous acquaintance with the subject is requisite, yet as it can by no means be made light and easy, even an elementary treatise must presuppose mental maturity in the reader, and habits of thoughtful study. For him I have tried to prepare a statement of psychological doctrine broad and true, on which he may build by his own thinking and wider reading. If his occupations do not permit this, he will at least have acquired a rounded knowledge of the generally approved principles and chief features of the science. A reader already acquainted with the history and literature of psychology will find many familiar things restated. Let him remember that the treatise is for the novice. But he will find some familiar things modified, and some things new. A few may be indicated as follows : The material object immediately perceived; the argument for immediate perception; the modified view of intuition; the argument for duality; the relation of feeling to cognition; the character and place assigned to belief; the separation of feeling and desire; the defense of freedom in willing"--Preface. Systems Of Psychotherapy

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Psychotherapy today encompasses a broad spectrum of approaches that focus to a varying extent on psychophysiological, behavioral, environmental, or other aspects of human problems. Despite the overlap that exists between many of these approaches, there is no method that integrates more than a few of these aspects. It is therefore important to understand the inherent advantages and disadvantages of each therapy system, and how each helps people to solve their problems. Systems of Psychotherapy: Dialectical Tensions and Integration provides an in-depth overview of the major therapeutic systems in practice today and outlines the philosophical differences and opportunities for integration among them. This volume also considers the new ideas and approaches to therapy stemming from the postmodernist and integrative movements. By highlighting the unique merits of each system, readers are encouraged to combine factors present in the various systems to create a comprehensive view of human nature and functioning that will improve therapeutic outcomes. Topics covered in this volume include: •Empirical foundations of psychotherapy •Treatment planning and the initial interview •Psychopharmacology •Cognitive-Behavioral interventions •Humanistic approaches •Interpersonal approaches •Family systems and couples approaches •Ecosystemic interventions Systems of Psychotherapy is an educational text which spans historical and contemporary issues in psychotherapy and is an ideal reference for students of clinical, counseling, and school psychology, psychiatric residents, and graduate students in clinical social work.

Kohut S Self Psychology For A Fractured World

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Drawing from Kohut's conceptualisation of self, Riker sets out how contemporary America's formulation of persons as autonomous, self-sufficient individuals is deeply injurious to the development of a vitalizing self-structure—a condition which lies behind much of the mental illness and social malaise of today's world. By carefully attending to Kohut's texts, Riker explains the structural, functional, and dynamic dimensions of Kohut's concept of the self. He creatively extends this concept to show how the self can be conceived of as an erotic striving for connectedness, beauty, and harmony, separate from the ego. Riker uses this distinction to reveal how social practices of contemporary American society foster skills and traits to advance the aims of the ego for power and control, but tend to suppress the needs of the self to authentically express its ideals and connect with others. The book explores the impact that this view can have on clinical practice, and concludes by imaginatively constructing an ideal self-psychological society, using Plato's Republic as a touchstone. Informed by self psychology and philosophy, this book is essential reading for psychoanalysts, psychotherapists and philosophers, seeking to revisit and revise constructions of both self and humanity.

Trauma Psychology

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

These volumes by a team of internationally recognized experts reflect and highlight both recognized and under-recognized events that cause trauma. They also examine current and emerging research on effective interventions to minimize and heal the effects of the trauma. Special attention is also given to culture and context, because what is considered healthy or problematic may vary widely across cultures, and culture can influence people's coping styles. Sources of trauma discussed include stalking, killing, terrorism, torture, kidnap, workplace violence, domestic violence, children and war, fires, floods, AIDS, pain, burns, spinal cord injury, children and medical illness, homelessness, and more. Case examples, treatment recommendations, and public policy recommendations are included in each of the chapters. The growing field of trauma psychology has been spurred recently by natural events from Hurricane Katrina to the Tsunami, and by terrorist events worldwide, as well as chronic health and social issues—from persistent pain to homelessness—that are mounting. The experts offer a gripping overview of the most traumatic and widespread events causing trauma and of the symptoms and health impairment that may result. Most important, they explain how we can best recognize, understand, and treat the sufferers and develop intervention policies.
