Every year, the Technical University of Munich, the Bundeswehr University, and the University of Applied Sciences in Munich invite researchers and practitioners to join the Munich Symposium on Lightweight Design. Experts from industry and academia discuss design tools, applications, and new developments. Topics include, e.g., composite structures, SHM, microstructures, material modelling, design for additive manufacturing, numerical optimization and in particular topology optimization in aerospace, automotive and other industries. Fire design of concrete structures has emerged in recent years as a high profile subject of great interest to both experts and the public. This has been largely prompted by severe damage to concrete in a number of recent tunnel fires, as well as a considerable amount of research and development that has taken place world-wide. fib Task Group 4.3, "Fire Design of Concrete Structures", therefore took the initiative to develop this bulletin in order to present the results of this international research to a wider group of concrete professionals. The report presents a general brief outline of the effect of fire on both concrete material and concrete structures, with emphasis placed on the important developments of the past few years, namely: (a) the increasing use of high strength concrete (HSC) in buildings, tunnels and bridges; (b) the growing acceptance of the use of performance based fire engineering calculations for the structural analysis and design against fire; (c) the problem of, and solutions to, explosive spalling; and (d) fires in tunnels. This report is not intended to be an exhaustive review of the effect of fire on concrete and concrete structures, nor to present a database of properties at high temperature. Instead, the main aims of this document are to present recent trends and developments, highlight key influencing factors, bring together the disparate but related issues in one short document, highlight the deficiencies in current practice and point to the future. The basic principles of performance based codes and fire engineering are also presented on the assumption that the reader is not a specialist in this field.

Impact cratering is arguably the most ubiquitous geological process in the Solar System. It has played an important role in Earth’s history, shaping the geological landscape, affecting the evolution of life, and generating economic resources. However, it was only in the latter half of the 20th century that the importance of impact cratering as a geological process was recognized and only during the past couple of decades that the study of meteorite impact structures has moved into the mainstream. This book seeks to fill a critical gap in the literature by providing an overview text covering broad aspects of the impact cratering process and aimed at graduate students, professionals and researchers alike. It introduces readers to the threat and nature of impactors, the impact cratering process, the products, and the effects – both destructive and beneficial. A series of chapters on the various techniques used to study impact craters provide a foundation for anyone studying impact craters for the first time.

This collection of recent activities provides researchers and scientists with the latest trends in characterization and developments of composed materials and structures. Here, the expression ‘composed materials’ indicates a wider range than the expression ‘composite material’ which is many times limited to classical fibre reinforced plastics. The idea of composed structures and materials is to join different components in order to obtain in total better properties than one of the single constituents can provide.
