Mathematics research opportunities for undergraduate students have grown significantly in recent years, but accessible research topics for first- and second-year students are still hard to find. To address this need, this volume provides beginning students who have already had some exposure to calculus with specific research projects and the tools required to tackle them. In addition to calculus, some of the later chapters require prerequisites such as linear algebra and statistics. Suggested prerequisites are noted at the beginning of each chapter. Linear algebra is a living, active branch of mathematics which is central to almost all other areas of mathematics, both pure and applied, as well as computer science, the physical and social sciences, and engineering. It entails an extensive corpus of theoretical results as well as a large body of computational techniques. The book is intended to be used in one of several possible ways: (1) as a self-study guide; (2) as a textbook for a course in advanced linear algebra, either at the upper-class undergraduate level or at the first-year graduate level; or (3) as a reference book. It is also designed to prepare a student for the linear algebra portion of prelim exams or PhD qualifying exams. The volume is self-contained to the extent that it does not assume any previous formal knowledge of linear algebra, though the reader is assumed to have been exposed, at least informally, to some basic ideas and techniques, such as the solution of a small system of linear equations over the real numbers. More importantly, it does assume a seriousness of purpose and a modicum of mathematical sophistication. The book also contains over 1000 exercises, many of which are very challenging.

This group includes college and university faculty, graduate students, investigators in research and development centers, and staff members at federal, state, and local agencies that conduct and use research within the discipline of mathematics. The intent of the authors of this volume is to provide useful perspectives as well as pertinent information for conducting investigations that are informed by previous work. The Handbook should also be a useful textbook for graduate research seminars. In addition to the audience mentioned above, the present Handbook contains chapters that should be relevant to four other groups: teacher educators, curriculum developers, state and national policy makers, and test developers and others involved with assessment. Mathematical Modeling for Epidemiology and Ecology provides readers with the mathematical tools needed to understand and use mathematical models and read advanced mathematical biology books. It presents mathematics in biological contexts, focusing on the central mathematical ideas and the biological implications, with detailed explanations. The author assumes no mathematics background beyond elementary differential calculus. An introductory chapter on basic principles of mathematical modeling is followed by chapters on empirical modeling and mechanistic modeling. These chapters contain a thorough treatment of key ideas and techniques that are often neglected in mathematics books, such as the Akaike Information Criterion. The second half of the book focuses on analysis of dynamical systems, emphasizing tools to simplify analysis, such as the Routh-Hurwitz conditions and asymptotic analysis. Courses can be focused on either half of the book or thematically chosen material from both halves, such as a course on mathematical epidemiology.
