BOOK EXCERPT:
The analysis of engineering structures has always been a challenge to engineers, and in the past, classical methods were used to quantify the response of a structure to the applied forces. These methods were suitable for the analysis of relatively simple structures that could be solved by hand calculations but complicated structures had to be simplified to a model that could be solved by classical methods. The results, however, were approximations depending on the modifications made to the structure as well as on the experience and judgement of the analyst. These limitations led to the derivation of the slope-deflection equations for continuous beams, and later, formulation of the moment distribution method. With the advent of electronic computers, systematic procedures for the analysis of structures have been developed. Computer programs help in obtaining required solutions to the simultaneous equations in the case of structures where the number of equations is large and hand calculations are not suitable. The detailed work with simultaneous equations can be made in a general and compact form by using matrix notation, leading to the development of the matrix methods of structural analysis. This book deals with the analysis of engineering structures made of skeletal members and covers the type of structures that are commonly used in practice. It builds up on the subject matter dealing with matrix algebra, analysis of bar elements, special forms of members, stability and vibration of structures, and pin-connected, rigid-plane, and 3D frames. It treats the important step of formulating the overall stiffness matrix of a structure in a systematic and straightforward manner and uses simple mathematical approaches wherever possible. The book is reader friendly, particularly for beginners who have no prior knowledge in this subject and can also be used as a textbook by undergraduate and postgraduate students studying for a degree in civil, structural, or mechanical engineering as well as by practicing engineers who have not studied this subject but are using software packages that deal with the analysis of engineering structures.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The sixth edition of Structural Dynamics: Theory and Computation is the complete and comprehensive text in the field. It presents modern methods of analysis and techniques adaptable to computer programming clearly and easily. The book is ideal as a text for advanced undergraduates or graduate students taking a first course in structural dynamics. It is arranged in such a way that it can be used for a one- or two-semester course, or span the undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition, this text will serve the practicing engineer as a primary reference. The text differs from the standard approach of other presentations in which topics are ordered by their mathematical complexity. This text is organized by the type of structural modeling. The author simplifies the subject by presenting a single degree-of-freedom system in the first chapters, then moves to systems with many degrees-of-freedom in the following chapters. Finally, the text moves to applications of the first chapters and special topics in structural dynamics. This revised textbook intends to provide enhanced learning materials for students to learn structural dynamics, ranging from basics to advanced topics, including their application. When a line-by-line programming language is included with solved problems, students can learn course materials easily and visualize the solved problems using a program. Among several programming languages, MATLAB® has been adopted by many academic institutions across several disciplines. Many educators and students in the U.S. and many international institutions can readily access MATLAB®, which has an appropriate programming language to solve and simulate problems in the textbook. It effectively allows matrix manipulations and plotting of data. Therefore, multi-degree-of freedom problems can be solved in conjunction with the finite element method using MATLAB®. The revised version will include: · solved 34 examples in Chapters 1 through 22 along with MALAB codes. · basics of earthquake design with current design codes (ASCE 7-16 and IBC 2018). · additional figures obtained from MATLAB codes to illustrate time-variant structural behavior and dynamic characteristics (e.g., time versus displacement and spectral chart). This text is essential for civil engineering students. Professional civil engineers will find it an ideal reference.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Annotation "Structural Dynamics in Aeronautical Engineering is a comprehensive introduction to the modern methods of dynamic analysis of aeronautical structures. The text represents carefully developed course materials, beginning with an introductory chapter on matrix algebra and methods for numerical computations, followed by a series of chapters discussing specific aeronautical applications. In this way, the student can be guided from the simple concept of a single-degree-of-freedom structural system to the more complex multidegree-of-freedom and continuous systems, including random vibrations, nonlinear systems, and aeroelastic phenomena. Among the various examples used in the text, the chapter on aeroelasticity of flight vehicles is particularly noteworthy with its clear presentation of the phenomena and its mathematical formulation for structural and aerodynamic loads.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Stochastic Analysis of Offshore Steel Structures provides a clear and detailed guide to advanced analysis methods of fixed offshore steel structures using 3D beam finite elements under random wave and earthquake loadings. Advanced and up-to-date research results are coupled with modern analysis methods and essential theoretical information to consider optimal solutions to structural issues. As these methods require and use knowledge of different subject matters, a general introduction to the key areas is provided. This is followed by in-depth explanations supported by design examples, relevant calculations and supplementary material containing related computer programmers. By combining this theoretical and practical approach Stochastic Analysis of Offshore Steel Structures cover a range of key concepts in detail including: The basic principles of standard 3D beam finite elements and special connections, Wave loading - from hydrodynamics to the calculation of wave loading on structural members, Stochastic response calculations with corresponding solution algorithms including earthquakes, and Fatigue damage, reliability calculation and reliability based design optimization. The broad and detailed coverage makes this a solid reference for research oriented studies and practical sophisticated design methods. Students, researchers, insuring bodies and practical designer offices can turn to Stochastic Analysis of Offshore Steel Structures to broaden their theoretical understanding and develop their practical designs and applications of 3D finite analysis in fixed offshore steel structures.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Since Lord Rayleigh introduced the idea of viscous damping in his classic work "The Theory of Sound" in 1877, it has become standard practice to use this approach in dynamics, covering a wide range of applications from aerospace to civil engineering. However, in the majority of practical cases this approach is adopted more for mathematical convenience than for modeling the physics of vibration damping. Over the past decade, extensive research has been undertaken on more general "non-viscous" damping models and vibration of non-viscously damped systems. This book, along with a related book Structural Dynamic Analysis with Generalized Damping Models: Identification, is the first comprehensive study to cover vibration problems with general non-viscous damping. The author draws on his considerable research experience to produce a text covering: dynamics of viscously damped systems; non-viscously damped single- and multi-degree of freedom systems; linear systems with non-local and non-viscous damping; reduced computational methods for damped systems; and finally a method for dealing with general asymmetric systems. The book is written from a vibration theory standpoint, with numerous worked examples which are relevant across a wide range of mechanical, aerospace and structural engineering applications. Contents 1. Introduction to Damping Models and Analysis Methods. 2. Dynamics of Undamped and Viscously Damped Systems. 3. Non-Viscously Damped Single-Degree-of-Freedom Systems. 4. Non-viscously Damped Multiple-Degree-of-Freedom Systems. 5. Linear Systems with General Non-Viscous Damping. 6. Reduced Computational Methods for Damped Systems
