Dr. Richard Logan, a well-known neurologist from Oakland, California, finds himself wrestling with unspoken affection for his closet friend, Maxine. Following Maxine’s marriage to their mutual friend and confidant, Brad, Logan is left dealing with a string of unsuccessful romantic endeavors, all stemming from his unaddressed feelings for Maxine. The situation becomes more complicated when Brad is diagnosed with a terminal disease and is forced to use a wheelchair, leaving Logan to confront his emotions and make a decision that could change his life forever. The portrayal of Dr. Richard Logan is incredibly relatable and human, thanks to the author’s meticulous attention to detail in developing his every personality and driving force authentically. His battle to reveal his love, which ultimately leads to Maxine’s union with Brad, is deeply moving. The reader can grasp the reasons behind Logan’s decision to keep his true feelings for Maxine hidden. The story skillfully delves into Logan’s inner turmoil and his struggle to let go, underscoring the often emotional fallout of not expressing one’s feelings. Maxine has everything she wants for one weekend. An exclusive, two-week artist residency in her future, and the man who adores her, Isaiah Moyawa, in bed. For the first time in her life, she sees a path to her dream of becoming an artist. Except she’ll be a starving artist because when she asks for the time off at work, she gets an ultimatum: drop the art or lose the day job. Isaiah says it's time for them to take the next step. She can move in with him and he'll support her with his millions while she pursues her dream. She puts her major trust issues aside, even though Isaiah keeps declining phone calls from his mother, and despite breaking her Rule #1: Never rely on a man to do for you what you can do for yourself. Declined phone calls escalate to Maxine. When his mother shows up at their home with an agenda, and with the woman claiming to be eight months pregnant with Isaiah's child, Maxine must learn what it means to trust herself before she can trust the love of her life. BOOK EXCERPT:
Maxine Smith's Unwilling Pupils is the authorized biography of Maxine Atkins Smith. As such it tells the story of the civil rights movement in Memphis from Smith's viewpoint. Primarily based on newspaper accounts from the 1960s and 1970s and on Smith's papers housed at the Memphis Public Library, the book also draws from a rich source of interviews conducted by the coauthors and others. This book presents a well-balanced historical background of the civil rights era even while serving as a tribute to Maxine Smith and her work. A panoramic view of Maxine's life, Maxine Smith's Unwilling Pupils, presents one woman's struggle as a prism for understanding the human dimensions of the fight for equality. The biography portrays Smith's lifelong focus on education as she tried to enlighten both blacks and whites about equality and the inalienable rights of all races. Along the way she became the face of the civil rights movement in Memphis during a critical time in the movement's history. Maxine's unwilling pupils often hated her for her outspoken and tenacious advocacy for those rights; her followers loved her for her unwavering commitment to ensure the rights of African Americans. Smith's selfless struggles as chronicled in this biography will leave no doubt that her influence on the progress of civil rights in Memphis was profound. Moreover, her example of tireless commitment should inspire the efforts of new generations of equal rights activists to come. Sherry L. Hoppe is president of Austin Peay State University. BOOK EXCERPT:
The numerous studies of Maxine Hong Kingston's touchstone work The Woman Warrior fail to take into account the stories in China Men, which were largely written together with those in The Woman Warrior but later published separately. Although Hong Kingston's decision to separate the male and female narratives enabled readers to see the strength of the resulting feminist point of view in The Woman Warrior, the author has steadily maintained that to understand the book fully it was necessary to read its male companion text. Maureen Sabine's ambitious study of The Woman Warrior and China Men aims to bring these divided texts back together with a close reading that looks for the textual traces of the father in The Woman Warrior and shows how the daughter narrator tracks down his history in China Men. She considers theories of intertextuality that open up the possibility of a dynamic interplay between the two books and suggests that the Hong family women and men may be struggling for dialogue with each other even when they appear textually silent or apart.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Maxine Greene is the most important philosopher of education in the United States today. The author of Teacher as Stranger (1973), Landscapes of Learning (1978), Dialectic of Freedom (1988), and Releasing the Imagination (1995), Greene has influenced tens of thousands of teachers in North America as well as her colleagues in philosophy of education, teacher education, and curriculum studies. While widely cited, Greene has not - until now - been the subject of sustained scholarly analysis and investigation. William F. Pinar has organized a systematic study of Greene's contribution from several points of view: studies of the four books; studies of the intellectual and aesthetic influences upon her theory; and her influence on the various specializations within the broad field of education: the teaching of English, arts education, philosophy of education, curriculum studies, religious education, cognitive theory, and theory of teaching. The book opens and concludes with Maxine Greene's own autobiographical statements.
