Robert Clouden was born 19 January 1774 in Irongray, Scotland. His parents were William Clouden and Mary Halliday. He married Janet Aitken 3 January 1799 in Dundrennan. They had eleven children. They emigrated in 1817 and settled in Nova Scotia, Canada. Robert died in 1848 in Auchencairn, Pictou County, Nova Scotia. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Nova Scotia, British Columbia, Alberta, New Brunswick, Ontario, Illinois and California.

Johann Jakob Hurr, son of Johann Georg Hurr and Anna Margaretha Kern, emigrated from Germany to America in 1805, with his wife, Anna Barbara Kehrer. They settled in Pennsylvania. Their son Jacob relocated to Missouri after the Civil War.

The name MacLeod comes from Clan MacLeod which is said to have originated in the western isles of Scotland. Charles Campbell MacLeod (1863-1930) appears to have emigrated to America in 1884 from Inverness, Scotland. He settled in Lynchburg, Virginia. In 1888 he married Ileita Howard and they were the parents of five children. Descendants live in Virginia, Alabama and other parts of the United States.

This is a reprint of J. P. MacLean's celebrated study of the Scottish Highlanders in America, the first work devoted exclusively to the subject. It presents an interesting account of Highland emigration, giving first an overview of the Highlanders of Scotland and then a description of the events which led to the various emigration and resettlement schemes, subsequently detailing the history of Highland settlements in the American colonies and Highlander participation in the French and Indian Wars and the Revolution. And it is laced throughout with lists of early land grants, petitioners, and officers of Highland regiments. In addition, some forty-five pages of the book are devoted to biographical sketches of distinguished Highlanders who served the cause of either Great Britain or America during the Revolution.
