The book "Polycrystalline Materials - Theoretical and Practical Aspects" is focused on contemporary investigations of plastic deformation, strength and grain-scale approaches, methods of synthesis, structurals, properties, and application of some polycrystalline materials. It is intended for students, post-graduate students, and scientists in the field of polycrystalline materials.

This book focuses on the emerging class of new materials characterized by ultra-fine microstrucures. The NATO ASI which produced this book was the first international scientific meeting devoted to a discussion of the mechanical properties and deformation behavior of materials having grain sizes down to a few nanometers. Topics covered include superplasticity, tribology, and the supermodulus effect. Review chapters cover a variety of other themes including synthesis, characterization, thermodynamic stability, and general physical properties. Much of the work is concerned with the issue of how far conventional techniques and concepts can be extended toward atomic scale probing. Another key issue concerns the structure of nanocrystalline materials, in particular, what is the structure and composition of the internal boundaries. These ultra-fine microstructures have proved to challenge even the finest probes that the materials science community has today.

This conference book contains papers presented at the 8th GACM Colloquium on Computational Mechanics for Young Scientists from Academia and Industry. The conference was held from August 28th – 30th, 2019 in Kassel, hosted by the Institute of Mechanics and Dynamics of the department for civil and environmental engineering and by the chair of Engineering Mechanics / Continuum Mechanics of the department for mechanical engineering of the University of Kassel. The aim of the conference is, to bring together young scientits who are engaged in academic and industrial research on Computational Mechanics and Computer Methods in Applied Sciences. It provides a plattform to present and discuss recent results from research efforts and industrial applications. In more than 150 presentations, given by young scientists, current scientific developments and advances in engineering practice in this field are presented and discussed. The book provides a complete overview of mechanical properties and fracture mechanics in materials science, mechanics, and physics. It details the macro- and micro-mechanical properties of metal structural materials, nonmetal structural materials, and various functional materials. It also discusses the macro and micro failure mechanism under different loadings and contains research results on thin film mechanics, smart material mechanics, and more.

This work is dedicated to the numerically efficient simulation of the material response of polycrystalline aggregates. Therefore, crystal plasticity is combined with a new non-linear homogenization scheme, which is based on piecewise constant stress polarizations with respect to a homogeneous reference medium and corresponds to a generalization of the Hashin-Shtrikman scheme. This mean field approach accounts for the one- and two-point statistics of the microstructure.

Tomography provides three-dimensional images of heterogeneous materials or engineering components, and offers an unprecedented insight into their internal structure. By using X-rays generated by synchrotrons, neutrons from nuclear reactors, or electrons provided by transmission electron microscopes, hitherto invisible structures can be revealed which are not accessible to conventional tomography based on X-ray tubes. This book is mainly written for applied physicists, materials scientists and engineers. It provides detailed descriptions of the recent developments in this field, especially the extension of tomography to materials research and engineering. The book is grouped into four parts: a general introduction into the principles of tomography, image analysis and the interactions between radiation and matter, and one part each for synchrotron X-ray tomography, neutron tomography, and electron tomography. Within these parts, individual chapters written by different authors describe important versions of tomography, and also provide examples of applications to demonstrate the capacity of the methods. The accompanying CD-ROM contains some typical data sets and programs to reconstruct, analyse and visualise the three-dimensional data.
