Fracture Mechanics In Layered And Graded Solids

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Mechanical responses of solid materials are governed by their material properties. The solutions for estimating and predicting the mechanical responses are extremely difficult, in particular for non-homogeneous materials. Among these, there is a special type of materials whose properties are variable only along one direction, defined as graded materials or functionally graded materials (FGMs). Examples are plant stems and bones. Artificial graded materials are widely used in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, biological engineering, and electronic engineering. This work covers and develops boundary element methods (BEM) to investigate the properties of realistic graded materials. It is a must have for practitioners and researchers in materials science, both academic and in industry. Covers analysis of properties of graded materials. Presents solutions based methods for analysis of fracture mechanics. Presents two types of boundary element methods for layered isotropic materials and transversely isotropic materials. Written by two authors with extensive international experience in academic and private research and engineering.

Nanocomposite Structures And Dispersions

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Nanocomposite Structures and Dispersions deals with the preparation of gelled, branched and crosslinked nanostructured polymers in the solution free radical polymerization and controlled/living radical polymerization and polymer and composite nanoparticles and nanostructures in disperse systems, the kinetics of direct and inverse disperse polymerizations (microemulsion, miniemulsion, emulsion, dispersion and suspension polymerization), the bottom-up approach building of functionalized nanoparticles, modelling of radical microemulsion polymerization, the characterization of traditional and non-traditional polymer dispersions, the collective properties of nanomaterials and their (bio)applications. This book is designed to bridge that gap and offers several unique features. First, it is written as an introduction to and survey of nanomaterials with a careful balance between basics and advanced topics. Thus, it is suitable for both beginners and experts, including graduate and upper-level undergraduate students. Second, it strives to balance the colloidal aspects of nanomaterials with physical principles. Third, the book highlights nanomaterial based architectures including composite or hybrid conjugates rather than only isolated nanoparticles. A number of ligands have been utilized to biodecorate the polymer and composite nanocarriers. Finally, the book provides an in depth discussion of important examples of reaction mechanisms of bottom-up building of functionalized nanoparticles, or potential applications of nanoarchitectures, ranging from physical to chemical and biological systems. - Free radical (controlled) polymerization, branching, crosslinking and gelling - Kinetics and mechanism of polymer nanoparticles formation - Modelling of radical polymerization in disperse systems - Polymer, composite and metal nanoparticles, nanostructures and nanomaterials - Smart nanostructures, biodecorated particles, nanocarriers and therapeutics

Part I Physical Chemistry Part Ii Solid State Physics

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The fourth volume of the Collected Works is devoted to Wigners contribution to physical chemistry, statistical mechanics and solid-state physics. One corner stone was his introduction of what is now called the Wigner function, while his paper on adiabatic perturbations foreshadowed later work on Berry phases. Although few in number, Wigners articles on solid-state physics laid the foundations for the modern theory of the electronic structure of metals.

Spectroscopy Of Solid State Laser Type Materials

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book presents an account of the course "Spectroscopy of Solid-State Laser-Type Materials" held in Erice, Italy, from June 16 to 30, 1985. This meeting was organized by the International School of Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy of the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture. The objective of the course was to present and examine the recent advances in spectroscopy and theoretical modelling relevant to the interpretation of luminescence and laser phenomena in several classes of solid-state materials. The available solid-state matrices (e.g. halides, oxides, glasses, semiconductors) and the full range of possible activators (transition ions, rare earth ions, post-transition ions, actinides, color centres) were considered. By bringing together specialists in the fields of solid-state luminescence and of solid-state laser materials, this course provided a much-needed forum for the critical . assessment of past developments in the R&D of solid-state lasers. Additional objectives of the meeting were to identify new classes of host/activator systems that show promise of laser operation; to alert researchers in solid-state luminescence to current technological needs for solid-state tunable lasers operating in the visible and infrared spectral regions; and generally to provide the scientific background for advanced work in solid state lasers. A total of 71 participants came from 54 laboratories and 21 nations (Austria, Belgium, Canada, F.R. of Germany, France, Greece, Ireland, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, P.R. of China, Poland, Rumania, Sweden, Switzerland, South Korea, Spain, Turkey, United Kingdom, U.S.A. and U.S.S.R.).
