Media And Power

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Media and Power addresses three key questions about the relationship between media and society. *How much power do the media have? *Who really controls the media? *What is the relationship between media and power in society? In this major new book, James Curran reviews the different answers which have been given, before advancing original interpretations in a series of ground-breaking essays. This book also provides a guided tour of the major debates in media studies. What part did the media play in the making of modern society? How did 'new media' change society in the past? Will radical media research recover from its mid-life crisis? Is public service television the dying product of the nation in an age of globalization? Media and Power provides both a clear introduction to media research and an innovative analysis of media power.

How Political Actors Use The Media

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book investigates how individual politicians and political parties strategically make use of the media to reach their political goals. Looking beyond a purely Americentric viewpoint, the chapters present data from more than ten Western democracies to argue that the media are both a source of information and an arena for political communication. This double functional role of the media is examined from both a theoretical and an empirical perspective, including chapters dealing with different aspects of politics - from campaigning to law making - and within different political contexts. The role of the news media is discussed from the perspective of the political actor, focusing on both the opportunities and the constraints the news media provide, resulting in a multidisciplinary text that will appeal to students and scholars of both communication and political science.

Mass Media In Greece

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In this examination of Greek press, radio and television, authors Zaharopoulos and Paraschos describe media which have been tremendously politicized, partisan, and dominated by foreign programming. As the political and economic face of Greece and Europe changes, the Greek media has been thrown into anarchy. Greece today is at a critical stage of transition from a traditional, developing nation to a more western-oriented, modern society. The media have mirrored Greece's struggle, and as important tools of political, socioeconomic, and cultural power, they have been at the forefront of the national crisis. In this examination of Greek press, radio and television, Zaharopoulos and Paraschos describe media which have been tremendously politicized, partisan, and dominated by foreign programming. As the political and economic face of Greece and Europe changes, the Greek media have been thrown into anarchy. Zaharopoulos and Paraschos trace the development of the media under different political regimes which have shaped its norms and structures. Historically, governments ranging from military juntas to democratically elected ones, have all been reluctant to share the use of the print media, radio and television, although opposition parties have been successful in loosening the now crumbling government monopoly. The traditionally powerful elements of society have benefitted most from radio and television ownership which, the authors say, will ultimately benefit Greek society as a whole. The authors discuss the Greek mass media's transformation from state control to privatization as a foreshadowing model of Eastern European media developments. Mass Media in Greece will be of particular interest to students of international communication and modern Greece.
