BOOK EXCERPT:
MEDITATION, CONFESSION AND HEALING IN WRITING TESTIMONIES This book is about the role of Bible meditation, confession and resolution through writing testimonies, which is a personal reflection on the word of God. This is a vital part of spiritual discipline that can lead to spiritual formation and development and yield great benefits in a Christian's spiritual growth including the healing of the whole person. "Dr. Samuel D. Lee's insightful book explains the inductive method of Bible study and the importance of meditation and confession. He explains very well the value of testimony writing. Meditation is prayerfully thinking about (and sometimes writing about) the contents of the Bible passage. Confession is not only confession of sin; it is also confession of faith and confession of praise and thanksgiving to God. He emphasizes the importance of writing and sharing in building up one's own faith and the faith of others. I believe that this book can be very helpful to the person who seeks to make his personal Bible study more meaningful." - Sarah Barry, Co-founder of University Bible Fellowship "I believe that Dr. Samuel D. Lee has without doubt written in lucid style the essentials of Christian disciplines of meditation in writing. This book is a must for all who desire to grow in their spiritual development in personal meditation." - Dr. David P. Lavigne, General Superintendent, The Evangelical Christian Church in Canada "Unquestionably this book is a significant contribution to the Christian church in postmodern time presenting an effective and persuasive way of spiritual formation and influential discipleship, shown in the case illustration of the practice." - Augustine Suh, Ph.D., Professor in Systematic Theology, Midwest University Samuel D. Lee, Ph.D., Bethany Divinity College & Seminary, is a missionary, Bible teacher and Biblical counsellor in Canada and an ordained pastor.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book examines alternative healing practices in American popular culture. From traditional folk approaches to more recent developments, it discusses the rise and fall of more than 100 popular approaches to addressing both physical ailments and mental health needs. Offering insightful accounts of everything from aging prevention to voodoo & Santería, Alternative Healing in American History: An Encyclopedia from Acupuncture to Yoga situates each popular approach in the history and culture of health and wellness in America. Moreover, the book shows that "orthodox" medicine and unconventional approaches may have more in common than many people think, because both are subject to the changing nature of the medical understanding and the strength of their appeal to consumers. While the main focus is on remedies lying outside the medical mainstream, the book also highlights how many widely accepted therapeutic treatments of the past—for example, "the water cure" (hydrotherapy) or lobotomy (psychosurgery)—fell out of favor and were quickly forgotten. Besides examining popular healing techniques, the book also explores the changing nature of the medical marketplace and how once-standard treatments (e.g., leeching, psychoanalysis) have had their ups and downs. The book comprises five chronological sections covering time periods from pre-1900 to the present.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In this unique book, Liz Done undertakes an affective thought-provoking nomadic inquiry into the doctoral process in which she engages with the writings of Deleuze, Cixous, Nietzsche, Foucault and many others. The paradox of learning, as thoroughly relational but simultaneously implying the radical specificity of every learner’s experience, is unpacked in a text that is careful to explain the ideas and theories that are mobilised. As a pedagogic intervention, the book seeks to raise questions, not answer them, but ultimately offers a very powerful statement about the value of education as learning and its capacity to transform a life. Academic production is revealed as a situated, embedded, relational, and complex process. The book’s rhizomatic threads include: transgressing linear neopositivist models, doing something different with theory, the importance of free experimentation, and memory as both mobility and freedom. Braidotti’s nomadic subjectivity and Gannon’s refusal to be pinned down in a bid for intellectual purity were also mobilised in the writing of this text. It performs the inclusive potential of Deleuzian and feminist poststructuralist thought, insisting on a scholarship that is about open inquiry, (ad)venture, and learning as multiplicity. It is untimely, as Deleuze might say, in its contemporary relevance.

BOOK EXCERPT:
A quirky, cosmopolitan novel about life and literature by the prize-winning Spanish writer Enrique Vila-Matas, author ofBartleby & Co. The narrator ofMontano's Maladyis a writer named José who is so obsessed with literature that he finds it impossible to distinguish between real life and fictional reality. Part picaresque novel, part intimate diary, part memoir and philosophical musings, Enrique Vila-Matas has created a labyrinth in which writers as various as Cervantes, Sterne, Kafka, Musil, Bolaño, Coetzee, and Sebald cross endlessly surprising paths. Trying to piece together his life of loss and pain, José leads the reader on an unsettling journey from European cities such as Nantes, Barcelona, Lisbon, Prague and Budapest to the Azores and the Chilean port of Valparaiso. Exquisitely witty and erudite, it confirms the opinion of Bernardo Axtaga that Vila-Matas is "the most important living Spanish writer."

BOOK EXCERPT:
How Can I Be As Hungry For God As I Am For a Cookie? From the author of the number one Christian weight loss memoir, Sweet Grace: How I Lost 250 Pounds, comes Teresa's long-awaited nine-session Bible study. For years I craved sweets and comfort foods. When I was lonely, tired, angry, depressed, overwhelmed, stressed or even happy, my first reaction was to run to my drug of choice. My god had become my stomach. God was not on the throne of my life. In order to lose 260 pounds, I had to put God back in His rightful place as my Lord, Master and King. I had to let Him lead me every step of the way. The result was understanding that God's heart's desire is that we all come closer to Him. I have come a long way from when I weighed 430 pounds. I now understand life is about stepping into the assignment God has for me, not eating whatever I want, whenever I want. This Bible study will relate to whatever is holding you back from doing the same, whether it is food, drugs, alcohol, bad relationships, lying, cheating, poor choices or just a plain old rebellious spirit. Designed for personal Bible study, the nine lessons, questions and activities in Sweet Hunger can also be used for groups. The FREE Sweet Hunger Leader's Guide is available from TeresaShieldsParker.com. Also available for purchase from her website are nine Sweet Hunger video teaching sessions.
