The story of an academic discipline is usually conveyed in grand movements and long spans, but it can also be told through the lives of individual scholars, through the development of specialties, through the creation and change of departments, and through the formation and transformation of organizations. Using twelve histories of micro-dimensions of communication studies, this volume shows how sometimes small decisions, single scholars, individual departments, and marginalized voices can have dramatic roles in the history and future of an academic discipline. As a compilation of micro-histories with macro-lessons this volume stands alone in communication studies. Read as a companion to A Century of Communication Studies, the National Communication Association’s centennial volume, it offers rich detail, missing links, and local narratives that fully flesh out the discipline. In either case, no education in communication studies is complete without an understanding of the themes, challenges, and triumphs embodied by the twelve micro-histories offered in this book. Reinventing Rhetoric Scholarship: Fifty Years of the Rhetoric Society of America collects essays reflecting on the history of the Rhetoric Society of America and the organization’s 18th Biennial Conference theme, “Reinventing Rhetoric: Celebrating the Past, Building the Future,” on the occasion of the Society’s 50th anniversary. Writing studies has been dominated throughout its history by grand narratives of the discipline, but in this volume Bruce McComiskey begins to explore microhistory as a way to understand, enrich, and complicate how the field relates to its past. This book studies everyday writing practices among ordinary people in a poor rural society in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Using the abundance of handwritten material produced, disseminated and consumed some centuries after the advent of print as its research material, the book's focus is on its day-to-day usage and on "minor knowledge," i.e., text matter originating and rooted primarily in the everyday life of the peasantry. The focus is on the history of education and communication in a global perspective. Rather than engaging in comparing different countries or regions, the authors seek to view and study early modern and modern manuscript culture as a transnational (or transregional) practice, giving agency to its ordinary participants and attention to hitherto overlooked source material. Through a microhistorical lens, the authors examine the strength of this aspect of popular culture and try to show it in a wider perspective, as well as asking questions about the importance of this development for the continuity of the literary tradition. The book is an attempt to explain “the nature of the literary culture” in general – how new ideas were transported from one person to another, from community to community, and between regions; essentially, the role of minor knowledge in the development of modern men.

"German Experts in the Development of Forestry in Russia" depicts the contribution of German specialists to the development of forestry in the Russian Empire. 3. The historian Alex Dreger analyses in his critical review the distorted facts presented in the digital "mBook Cultural History of Russia-Germans". 4. The former child prisoner of the Soviet concentration zones for Russia-Germans Margarita Unruh talks about her childhood in the Central Asian Karakum Desert. Thanks to the mutual support and compassion of the indigenous Uzbeks, three sisters without parents were able to survive the cruel times and ultimately establish themselves in life. 5. In his review, Alexej Debolski deals with the story "Our Courtyard" by Hugo Wormsbecher, who wanted to remind the reader of some events from the time of the German-Soviet War (1941-1945). Hugo Wormsbecher describes the cruel events from the perspective of a Russia-German small child. 6. Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Ileskan Smanov believes that art of painting helps a growing person to comprehend the world and contributes to the harmonious development of school children. 7. The article "Concordia Shall Be Her Name" by Walther Friesen describes the history of the "Schiller Bell", donated by the members of the "Moscow Schiller Society" to Schiller's birthplace, Marbach am Neckar.

There are seven articles in issue 2, March 2022 of "Journal of Ethnic Microhistory". Johann Friesen describes his experiences in the first days of the Soviet-German War 1941-1945. He was twice wounded, but in July 1942 he was sent in a cattle wagon to a Siberian labour camp because of his German nationality. The publication of Hugo Wormsbecher is devoted to the state of education and culture of Russia-Germans after dismantling their autonomy in 1941 and their first legal steps for the resurrection of it. Andrei Triller deals with the problems of admission to Germany of Late Ethnic German Repatriates. Antonina Schneider-Stremjakowa tackles the problem of national affiliation of Russia-German writers. The essay "Strategic Factor in the Modernization of Methodological Work in Schools of Kazakhstan", written by Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Ileskan Smanuly Smanov, Acting Associate Professor Gulmira Abdurasulovna Bachramova, and Acting Associate Professor Gaziza Ileskan Smanova emphasizes the importance of the implementation of the Concept of the 12-Year-School-Education in the Light of the Introduction of the Idea of the national idea MANGILIK EL. The paper "A Lot of Attention is that a Failure of the Parents" attributed to the anonymised author highlights the uneasy relations of parents with the German Youth Welfare Office. In the last article Professor Ileskan Smanuly Smanov investigates the influence of painting as the most impressive branch of visual arts on educational process of children.
