This book explores the question of how equitable and inclusive education can be implemented in heterogeneous classes where learners’ languages and cultures reflect the social reality of mass migration and everyday plurilingualism. The book brings together researchers and practitioners working in inclusive teaching and learning in a variety of migration contexts from pre-school to university. The book opens with an exploration of the relationship between language ideologies and policies with respect to the inclusion of learners for whom the language of education is not the language spoken in the home. The following section focuses on innovative pedagogical practices which allow migrants to be socially, culturally and institutionally included at school and at university while using their plurilingual competences as resources for learning/teaching and allowing them to fully realise their potential.

Migration, Multilingualism and Schooling in Southern Europe, edited by Sandro Caruana, Liliana Coposescu and Stefania Scaglione, deals with a highly current topic in Europe today, namely migration in Southern European countries and its impact on children in primary schooling. The volume deals with migration, both through the contribution of experts in the field, and through the results of an EU-funded project, MERIDIUM, which spanned over three years and touched on a number of topical issues. The studies included in the volume mainly take place in six countries, traditionally known for outbound rather than inbound migration, and they examine how recent waves of migration are affecting language use, linguistic attitudes and perception towards language diversity. Some of the questions addressed in the various chapters of the volume are: how has migration in Southern Europe altered the sociolinguistic profile of some regions? How do children in schools, and their parents, react to the presence of different languages and to different cultures in educational institutions? Do educational authorities, school directors and teachers feel adequately equipped to face the challenges that these demographic changes are bringing about? Is there adequate planning and are there sufficient language policies in order to provide the necessary framework which could lead to better integration of migrants in schools?

This book highlights the need to develop new educational perspectives in which multilingualism is valorised and strategically used in settings and contexts of instruction and learning. Situated in the current educational debate about multilingualism and ethno-linguistic minorities, chapter authors examine the polarised response to heightened linguistic diversity and how the debate is very much premised on binary views of monolingualism and multi- or bilingualism. Contributors argue that the diverse linguistic backgrounds of immigrant and minority students should be considered an asset, instead of being regarded as a barrier to teaching and learning. Over the past 40 years, Jim Cummins has proposed a number of highly influential theoretical concepts, including the threshold and interdependence hypotheses and the distinction between conversational fluency and academic language proficiency. In this book, he provides a personal account of how these ideas developed and he examines the credibility of critiques they have generated, using the criteria of empirical adequacy, logical coherence, and consequential validity. These criteria of theoretical legitimacy are also applied to the evaluation of two different versions of translanguaging theory – Unitary Translanguaging Theory and Crosslinguistic Translanguaging Theory – in a way that significantly clarifies this controversial concept.

Located at the intersection of humanities and applied informatics, the fledgling discipline of Digital Humanities is bringing new impulses to the field of (Romance) linguistics. Those are especially productive in the context of migration and heteroglossic practices, which encounter constraining language ideologies in Western societies. The aim of this volume is to critically reflect on both the usefulness and limitations of digitization in different areas and superdiverse contexts of the Spanish-speaking world. Through 11 case studies, it illuminates the digital turn from different theoretical and methodological perspectives, providing a better understanding of the complex interplay between language and digitization.

From an international, research-led perspective, this book explores how languages are foregrounded in education in different countries and educational sectors, and among different groups of people in contexts of migration. It is concerned with the movement of people and their languages as they migrate across borders, and as languages—and their speakers—are under threat, pressure and pain, even to the point of being silenced. The contributors explore the multilingual possibilities and opportunities that these situations present. For example: where children’s education is neglected because of displacement or exclusion; or in classrooms where teachers and educational leaders seek to meet the needs of all learners, including those who are new citizens, refugees, or asylum seekers. This book examines language education policy in European migrant-hosting countries. By applying the Multiple Streams Framework to detailed case studies on Austria and Italy, it sheds light on the factors and processes that innovate education policy. The book illustrates an education policy design that values language diversity and inclusion, and compares underlying policymaking processes with less innovative experiences.
