BOOK EXCERPT:
Epilepsy is a common condition where sudden bursts of electrical activity in the brain cause seizures or fits. There are lots of possible symptoms of epileptic seizures, including uncontrollable shaking or loss of awareness of surroundings. There are many other disorders with symptoms that mimic those of epilepsy, thus accurate diagnosis is essential for effective treatment. This book is a comprehensive guide to the diagnosis of disorders that may mimic epilepsy. Divided into 22 sections, each chapter covers a different epilepsy imitator presented as an analytical discourse. A number of case studies are also included. The book concludes with discussion on the use of EEG (a test that detects electrical activity in the brain using small, metal discs (electrodes) attached to the scalp) and its potential pitfalls. Also included, is a chapter dedicated to Sir William Gowers, a British neurologist at the forefront of the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy and other neurological disorders (1845-1915). The text is further enhanced by clinical images and figures. Key points Comprehensive guide to diagnosis of MIMICS of epilepsy Covers many different imitators presented as analytical discourse Includes discussion on use and potential pitfalls of diagnostic EEG Features clinical images and figures as well as a selection of case studies

BOOK EXCERPT:
Epilepsy is the most common serious neurological condition, affecting children and adults, and can occur in a variety of medical settings. It has many causes and many forms, and a variable prognosis. Mortality and morbidity are high, social and legal consequences can stretch well beyond the purely medical, and its management is often poor. Part of the Oxford Textbooks in Clinical Neurology (OTCN) series, this volume covers the scientific basis, clinical diagnosis, and treatment of epilepsy and epileptic seizures. Written by internationally-renowned specialists, each chapter comprehensively covers the current knowledge and evidence base related to each aspect of the disorder, with an emphasis on the personal experience of the authors. The print edition of the Oxford Textbook of Epilepsy and Epileptic Seizures is complemented by an online version, which allows access to the full content of the textbook, contains links from the references to primary research journal articles, enables full text searches, and provides access to figures and tables that can be downloaded to PowerPoint?. This textbook will prove a useful clinical reference for neurologists and senior trainees in neurology, an educational manual for trainees, and will offer practical assistance to all physicians advising people with epilepsy.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, is a psychiatric disorder that can occur following the experience or witnessing of life-threatening events such as military combat, natural disasters, terrorist incidents, serious accidents, or violent personal assaults like rape. People who suffer from PTSD often relive the experience through nightmares and flashbacks, have difficulty sleeping, and feel detached or estranged, and these symptoms can be severe enough and last long enough to significantly impair the person's daily life. PTSD is marked by clear biological changes as well as psychological symptoms. PTSD is complicated by the fact that it frequently occurs in conjunction with related disorders such as depression, substance abuse, problems of memory and cognition, and other problems of physical and mental health. The disorder is also associated with impairment of the person's ability to function in social or family life, including occupational instability, marital problems and divorces. PTSD is associated with a number of distinctive neurobiological and physiological changes. PTSD is treated by a variety of forms of psychotherapy and drug therapy. This new book presents leading research from around the world.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Unlike many other diagnostic procedures, EEG, now over 80 years old, and epilepsy monitoring, now over 40 years old, have demonstrated their usefulness and stood the test of time. Although the benefits of these diagnostic procedures are clear, monitoring is currently not available to the majority of patients in need. One of the factors limiting broader implementation is the lack of practitioners with special expertise. Epilepsy and Intensive Care Monitoring was developed to address this concern. This practical volume contains detailed chapters covering all areas of clinical epilepsy monitoring. Featuring expert authors from major epilepsy centers, this seminal work reviews all current procedures and applications for monitoring adults and children with epilepsy in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and the ICU. Opening sections are devoted to indications, procedures, administrative considerations, and technical aspects of the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and ICU monitoring, followed by dedicated sections on EEG diagnosis and localization and monitoring of neurological disorders in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and ICU. The book concludes with special procedures and an Appendix with guidelines for organizing epilepsy monitoring centers and technical aspects of EEG monitoring. Key Features include Covers both adult and pediatric Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and ICU monitoring Contains over 235 high-quality EEGs and other illustrations, including an 8-page color section Comprehensive coverage; no other book in this area has comparable breadth and depth Clinical Focus Expert authors tell you when and how to perform the procedures they discuss

BOOK EXCERPT:
This volume is the second in a series developed under the auspices of the World Federation of Neurology to meet the needs of neurologists who must practice medicine without many of the advantages that are often taken for granted in the industrialized world. It is targeted to neurologists practicing in low-resource environments and those who wish to practice cost-effective neurology, and addresses issues important for neurologists in developing countries that are not covered in standard textbooks. The series will update the reader in currently accepted diagnostic and management practice. Material is presented in a user-friendly, interactive manner, with abundant case material. Epilepsy is one of the most common serious primary brain disorders, affecting forty million people worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, epilepsy accounts for 1% of the Global Burden of Disease, equivalent to lung cancer in men and to breast cancer in women. It is not surprising, therefore, that ten to twenty texts on epilepsy are published annually. These texts contain the very latest information on diagnosis and treatment of various aspects of epilepsy; however, approximately 80% of people with epilepsy in the world live in developing countries, where modern diagnostic and treatment approaches do not exist. Upwards of 90% of people with epilepsy in these areas receive no treatment at all. This is the first text to address the issues faced by neurologists who must deliver care with limited resources, often in a setting of tropical diseases and malnutrition, that characterize practice in developing countries.
