Modern Investment Management And The Prudent Man Rule

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In recent years the field of finance has exploded with innovation. New products, services and techniques abound. The risks of inflation, the volatility of interest rates, the deregulation of financial intermediaries and the unbundling of financial services have combined to present investment managers with challenges and opportunities far greater than in the past. For trustees and managers of pension, trust, endowment, and similar funds, the task of meeting the challenges and exploiting the opportunities is much more difficult. These fiduciaries must measure their investment decisions against constrained interpretations of a legal standard--the prudent man rule--that have caused it to lag far behind changes in investment theory and the marketplace. Drawing on financial history, a major opinion survey of institutional investors, and comprehensive reviews of the law and of the lessons of modern portfolio theory for prudence, this book presents a powerful case that the prudent man rule as elaborated in legal treatises and much of the case law would virtually compel a fiduciary to act imprudently in terms of financial theory and marketplace reality. In proposing a modern paradigm of investment prudence, the book uses illustrations drawn from such traditionally suspect categories of investment fiduciaries as securities lending, real estate, venture capital, options and futures and repurchaser agreements. An unusual examination of the interaction of the worlds of law and finance, this work will be of interest to fiduciaries who are subject to some from of prudent man rule and all others, including judges, lawyers and investment managers, who are called upon to interpret and apply that legal standard.

New Issues In The Theory Of Investment

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The investment good market, together with the consumer good market, the money market and the labour market, are indeed the most extensively studied markets. The exhaustive survey of investment theory by Eisner and Strotz, already quoted four hundred references in 1963, although this work advocating for adjustment costs, was in fact only carried out at the very beginning of modern investment theory! This chapter gives an introduction of the extensive field and is an attempt to present some key ideas of investment theory. 1) We show that modern investment theory is the integration of many traditional approaches. The content of the chapter is set as follows. Section 2 presents an illustrative model of investment theory. Section 3, using this model, describes the investment decision of the firm. Sections 4 to 10 each present a "classical" investment hypothesis within the framework of the model. Section 11 concludes. For convenience, the key to the symbols used is given in Table 1. 2. The Model of the Firm Investment theory was born with the claim of Keynes (1936) that besides the capital demand (demand for a stock of capital at a point in time), an investment demand (demand for the increment of the capital stock in a period 1) Recent surveys are: Abel (1988), Coen and Eisner (1987) Artus and Muet (1984). The book on investment theory by Nickell (1978) is outstanding.

Applied Investment Theory

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Institutions now dominate trading in equities around the world. Mutual funds are the most prominent, and doubly important as custodians of retirement savings. Despite this, there is no comprehensive description of fund manager behaviour, much less a matching theory. This is troubling because one of the most economically significant puzzles in finance is why experienced, well-resourced fund managers cannot outperform the market. Applied Investment Theory: How Equity Markets Behave, and Why brings together academic research, empirical evidence and real market experience to provide new insights into equity markets and their behaviours. The book draws upon the author’s rich industry experience and academic research, plus over 40 interviews with fund managers on three continents and across different markets. The result is an innovative model that explains the puzzle of poor performance by mutual funds in terms of structural features of markets, the managed investment industry, and the conduct of fund managers. This book provides a fully integrated depiction of what markets and investors do, and why – insights that will resonate with the needs of investors, wealth managers and industry regulators. It is fully documented, but free of jargon and arcane math, and provides a grounded theory that is relevant to anyone who wants to pierce the opacity of mutual fund operations. Applied Investment Theory sets out a new paradigm in investment that is at the forefront of what should be an industrial-scale development of new finance theory following two decades of almost back-to-back financial crises.
