Foundations Of Modern Probability

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Unique for its broad and yet comprehensive coverage of modern probability theory, ranging from first principles and standard textbook material to more advanced topics. In spite of the economical exposition, careful proofs are provided for all main results. After a detailed discussion of classical limit theorems, martingales, Markov chains, random walks, and stationary processes, the author moves on to a modern treatment of Brownian motion, L=82vy processes, weak convergence, It=93 calculus, Feller processes, and SDEs. The more advanced parts include material on local time, excursions, and additive functionals, diffusion processes, PDEs and potential theory, predictable processes, and general semimartingales. Though primarily intended as a general reference for researchers and graduate students in probability theory and related areas of analysis, the book is also suitable as a text for graduate and seminar courses on all levels, from elementary to advanced. Numerous easy to more challenging exercises are provided, especially for the early chapters. From the author of "Random Measures".

The Oxford Handbook Of The Sociology Of Finance

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Recent years have seen a surge of interest in the workings of financial institutions and financial markets beyond the discipline of economics, which has been accelerated by the financial crisis of the early twenty-first century. The Oxford Handbook of the Sociology of Finance brings together twenty-nine chapters, written by scholars of international repute from Europe, North America, and Asia, to provide comprehensive coverage on a variety of topics related to the role of finance in a globalized world, and its historical development. Topics include global institutions of modern finance, types of actors involved in financial transactions and supporting technologies, mortgage markets, rating agencies, and the role of financial economics. Particular attention is given to financial crises, which are discussed in a special section, as well as to alternative forms of finance, including Islamic finance and the rise of China. The Handbook will be an indispensable tool for academics, researchers, and students of contemporary finance and economic sociology, and will serve as a reference point for the expanding international community of scholars researching these areas from a broadly-defined sociological perspective.

Probability Theory

BOOK EXCERPT:

Events are a kind of abstraction achieved through mathematical process. This abstraction is done on the base of non-deterministic events. Measured quantities can also be used for such abstraction. Measured quantities can be single occurrence or also follow random fashion for time evolving multiple occurrences. Making predictions about the outcome of random events is not always easy or even impossible sometimes. However, if influences are made on sequence of individual events, they will tend to follow certain patterns that are much easy to study, practice and predict. For instance, if outcome of coin flipping or roll of dice is influenced by outer factors such as friction, they will follow a specific pattern when proving outcome. Once this certain pattern is figured out and understood properly, it becomes much easier to predict the outcome with maximum accuracy. It means that it is hard to understand future outcome of subsequent random events that makes it hard to predict them. However, it is easy to predict pattern exhibited by these group of events that makes it easy to predict them and their corresponding events also. To describe such patterns certain mathematical results or concepts are used. Law of large numbers and central limit theorem are two main concepts that are used to study and describe such patterns followed by sequential random events.

Geometric Aspects Of Probability Theory And Mathematical Statistics

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

It is well known that contemporary mathematics includes many disci plines. Among them the most important are: set theory, algebra, topology, geometry, functional analysis, probability theory, the theory of differential equations and some others. Furthermore, every mathematical discipline consists of several large sections in which specific problems are investigated and the corresponding technique is developed. For example, in general topology we have the following extensive chap ters: the theory of compact extensions of topological spaces, the theory of continuous mappings, cardinal-valued characteristics of topological spaces, the theory of set-valued (multi-valued) mappings, etc. Modern algebra is featured by the following domains: linear algebra, group theory, the theory of rings, universal algebras, lattice theory, category theory, and so on. Concerning modern probability theory, we can easily see that the clas sification of its domains is much more extensive: measure theory on ab stract spaces, Borel and cylindrical measures in infinite-dimensional vector spaces, classical limit theorems, ergodic theory, general stochastic processes, Markov processes, stochastical equations, mathematical statistics, informa tion theory and many others.

Probability Theory

BOOK EXCERPT:

A collection of papers presented at the conference on Probability Theory - Philosophy, Recent History and Relations to Science, University of Roskilde, Denmark, September 16-18, 1998. Since the measure theoretical definition of probability was proposed by Kolmogorov, probability theory has developed into a mature mathematical theory. It is today a fruitful field of mathematics that has important applications in philosophy, science, engineering, and many other areas. The measure theoretical definition of probability and its axioms, however, are not without their problems; some of them even puzzled Kolmogorov. This book sheds light on some recent discussions of the problems in probability theory and their history, analysing their philosophical and mathematical significance, and the role pf mathematical probability theory in other sciences.

Natural Axiom System Of Probability Theory The Mathematical Model Of The Random Universe

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The causation space established in this book is a mathematical model of the random universe and a “living house” of all random tests and probability spaces. By using this space, one can introduce the mathematical calculation methods related to probability spaces and random tests. The book also points out that the basic unit to be studied in the probability theory is the random test, and not a stand-alone event.
