When God Speaks Through Worship

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

When God Speaks through Worship: Stories Congregations Live By is a collection of stories of congregational worship in which God's ongoing presence, speech, and activity are apparent. These stories of proclaiming the gospel, teaching the faith, praying, singing, baptizing, blessing, and sharing bread and wine in Jesus's name share the purpose of these activities in worship, yet still challenge the reader to explore the motives behind them. When we worship in church, are we worshiping God, or ourselves? Has worship become more people-centered than Christ-centered? We have our preferred styles, but is that getting in the way of the purpose of worship? In his follow-up to When God Speaks through Change: Preaching in Times of Congregational Transition and When God Speaks through You: How Faith Convictions Shape Preaching and Mission, Craig A. Satterlee uses eight stories to inspire other congregations to seek God through their worship. He discusses both the joys and challenges of worship, as well as the supportive parts of it, such as specific vocations, planning, and communication. However your church chooses to express itself through worship, this book will make you think about how you re going about it, why, and what impact it is having on the people within your congregation and the community around it.

Entrepreneurship

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The authors present core concepts of entrepreneurship in an easy-to-follow, logical sequence. Starting with basic definitions and an overarching conceptual framework in Part I, the book then addresses topics pertaining to Venture Initiation (Part II), Venture Management (Part III), and Venture Development (Part IV). Each chapter contains a case study in which a real-life entrepreneur, who confronts the issues of growth and competition, is followed. Venture initiation and development are key components of this book. Entrepreneurship has all the standard features that entrepreneurs-in-training need. The book's strength, however, lies in the clear, straightforward, and logical manner in which the various topics within this complex subject are presented. The book also includes learning objectives, outlines, terms, and review questions.

The Spirit Of Witness

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The term ‘witness’ has become synonymous with evangelism, but true witnessing is usually found in dissenting: it refuses to bow to idols, or to take the easy road, or deny Christ and all he died for. This collection is rooted in that belief that having the mind of Christ means we will do things differently. It offers practical resources for pastoral care that celebrates people on the margins of the church, and provides liturgies for those who suffer racism or injustice, who experience tragedy and loss, who raise their voices in protest or lament, and more. These texts do not carry the stamp of approval of any church body, but will bring the light of the gospel where it is needed. Arranged in six sections, it includes contributions from well-known and new voices covering the themes of: • Witness in Ordinary Time • Communion • Birth and Baptism • United in Love • Suffering Presence • Death and Resurrection

Vigilant Things

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Winner of the 2012 Melville J. Herskovits award (African Studies Association) Throughout southwestern Nigeria, Yoruba men and women create objects called aale to protect their propertiesfarms, gardens, market goods, firewoodfrom the ravages of thieves. Aale are objects of such unassuming appearance that a non-Yoruba viewer might not register their important presence in the Yoruba visual landscape: a dried seedpod tied with palm fronds to the trunk of a fruit tree, a burnt corncob suspended on a wire, an old shoe tied with a rag to a worn-out broom and broken comb, a ripe red pepper pierced with a single broom straw and set atop a pile of eggs. Consequently, aale have rarely been discussed in print, and then only as peripheral elements in studies devoted to other issues. Yet aale are in no way peripheral to Yoruba culture or aesthetics. In Vigilant Things, David T. Doris argues that aale are keys to understanding how images function in Yoruba social and cultural life. The humble, often degraded objects that comprise aale reveal as eloquently as any canonical artwork the channels of power that underlie the surfaces of the visible. Aale are warnings, intended to trigger the work of conscience. Aale objects symbolically threaten suffering as the consequence of transgressionthe suffering of disease, loss, barrenness, paralysis, accident, madness, fruitless labor, or deathand as such are often the useless residues of things that were once positively valued: empty snail shells, shards of pottery, fragments of rusted iron, and the like. If these objects share suffering and uselessness as constitutive elements, it is because they already have been made to suffer and become useless. Aale offer would-be thieves an opportunity to recognize themselves in advance of their actions and to avoid the thievery that would make the "useless" people.
