More Musings And Poetry

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Vic Nippert brings us more of his ramblings through life, from experiences he’s had raising dogs to feeding crows, and from dealing with dust bunnies’ rejection to butterflies in flight and migration. And much more including Valentine covered underwear! More Musings and Poetry is a continuation of the book Musings written by Vic Nippert and published by Covenant Books. A collection of articles written for his church’s newsletter. More Musings and Poetry includes some of the poems he has written that were begun as a result of rough times in his later years, some of the things we will all face or have already done so no matter what our ages. Many of the articles were inspired by his own view of the energy and panoramic surroundings of his Hudson Valley home. An expanse with important historic legends and stories from Rip Van Winkle, The Revolutionary War, the first steamboat, mansions of millionaires along the Hudson River to contemporary changes in towns and cities undergoing organic trans-formations on the banks up the Hudson River. But the people and their viewpoints and behavior change slower than the building construction and store fronts around them and it’s the people that Vic observes that he writes about and the meaning of their lives. And his life too. The famous writer J.R.R. Tolkien wrote in The Fellowship of the Ring a much-used quote, “Not all who wander are lost.” And this is the goal of many of Vic’s writings and musings. Each one of us has an observation about our goals in life and how we may or may not succeed in reaching them. But we all are looking for our own meaning in life and it may take some time to attain what that goal is. Many times, the wandering can be quite amusing, teaching us that the voyage itself was the real goal all along. Enjoy!

Poetry In Pieces

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Set against the cultural and political backdrop of interwar Europe and the Americas, Poetry in Pieces is the first major study of the Peruvian poet Cesar Vallejo (1892-1938) to appear in English in more than thirty years. Vallejo lived and wrote in two distinct settings---Peru and Paris---which were continually crisscrossed by new developments in aesthetics, politics, and practices of everyday life. Michelle Clayton combines close readings of Vallejo's writings with cultural, historical, and theoretical analysis, connecting Vallejo---and Latin American poetry---to the broader panorama of international modernism and the avant-garde, and to writers and artists such as Rainer Maria Rilke, James Joyce, Georges Bataille, and Charlie Chaplin. Poetry in Pieces sheds new light on one of the key figures in twentieth-century Latin American literature, while exploring ways of rethinking the parameters of international lyric modernity.

The Moneyya Chronicles

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

“The Moneyya Chronicles” begins at a time when the drums of the Vietnam War were beating loudly on America’s shores, creating fear and confusion in the hearts of those who were soon to attain manhood. Through the mediums of poetry, prose and painting, Bhikkhu Moneyya explores questions that arose as a natural consequence of the times and describes the path that he chose to answer them, first as a freewheeling traveler, later as an ashram resident and finally as a Theravada Buddhist monk. Transcending the social and political dialectics of daily life, this is a journey of the mind and heart that will rouse, entertain and ultimately beckon the reader onto a path laid out some 2600 years ago, in a land where a good friend was more than just a friend but one who could help a seeker open his eyes to the hidden truth within.

Revolutions In Romantic Literature

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This concise Broadview anthology of primary source materials is unique in its focus on Romantic literature and the ways in which the period itself was characterized by wide-ranging, self-conscious debates about the meaning of literature. It includes materials that are not available in other Romantic literature anthologies. The anthology is organized into thirteen sections that highlight the intensity and sophistication with which a variety of related literary issues were debated in the Romantic period. These debates posed fundamental questions about the very nature of literature as a cultural phenomenon, the extent and role of the reading public, literature's relation to the sciences and the aesthetic, the influence of contemporary commercial pressures, and the impact of perceived excesses in consumer fashions. The anthology foregrounds the ways that these literary debates converged with broader social and political controversies such as the French Revolution, the struggle for women's rights, colonialism, and the anti-slave trade campaign. This anthology includes an impressive range of writings from the period (including literary criticism and philosophical, political, scientific, and travel writing) which embodies the collection's broad approach to Romantic literature. Both lesser-known and more canonical writings are included, and the selections are organized by topic in such a way as to dramatize the debates and exchanges which characterize the Romantic period.
