To do so, she has spoken to dozens of mothers, and here adds their recommendations on family situations, finding the right schools, and what to do after high school. Weiss accomplishes her aim admirably. She sympathizes with the feeling among many parents that the educational ``professionals'' usually offer more confusion than clarity. Indeed, her book should be required reading for teachers, pediatricians, and counselors so that they can better understand the problems faced by special-needs families. Weiss does for hard-to-define learning disabilities what Terrell Dougan and Lyn Isbell did in We Have Been There ( LJ 2/15/83) for families living with mental retardation.
