This edited book attempts to foreground how challenges and complexities between policy and practice intertwine in the teaching and learning of the STEM subjects in multilingual settings, and how they (policy and practice) impact on educational processes, developments and outcomes. The unique feature of this book, thus, lies in its combination of not just language issues in the teaching and learning of the STEM subjects, but also in how these issues relate to policy and practice in multilingual contexts and how STEM research and practice may inform and shape language policies and their implementation in multilingual contexts. This book is of interest to stakeholders involved in STEM education such as researchers, undergraduate and graduate students, tertiary level teachers, teacher educators, curriculum developers as well as other professionals with responsibilities in STEM education subjects. This book provides a wealth of insights into the use of technology to deliver university courses with English as the medium of instruction (EMI). It presents practical case studies from a number of Chinese HE institutions that offer degree programmes in English. The cases illustrate the benefits to be gained from collaborative action research among English language educators and subject specialists in the Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities, Business and Management. The chapters address students’ and instructors’ engagements with established technologies, such as the Moodle learning management system, and with more recent innovations, such as mobile learning, social media use in the classroom, and game-based learning. This book brings together the first book collection of African research in mathematics education in multilingual societies and chronicles current research in different linguistic contexts across the African continent, (including Algeria, Namibia, Malawi, Morocco, Rwanda, South Africa) on issues of multilingualism in mathematics education, but more importantly, it foregrounds pertinent issues for future research. With many of the authors building on earlier path-breaking African research, the book is a unique contribution of careful thinking through how linguistic diversity and multilingualism manifest in ways that differ from one geopolitical context to another. This book covers original research on the implementation of open educational practices through the use of open educational resources at the university level. The emphasis on open education in this book is on contextualising resources, supporting student agency and fostering self-directed learning specifically within a South African milieu. The envisaged chapters cover conceptual and review research and empirical work focussing on open educational practices and the use of renewable assessments. The work starts off with an overview of an institutional-wide open education project that prompted the research followed by research on open education in terms of various modules in the health science, music education, law, philosophy, dietetics, anthropology, French language learning, journalism and political science. Mathematical writing is essential for students’ math learning, but it’s often underutilized due to unclear guidelines. These proceedings present a selection of papers from the ICTTE 2021 conference. While face-to-face classroom instruction is brought back, there are a lot of lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic that schools, teacher training and education institutions, and government have to take into account. There is a need to reconsider what additional knowledge and skills pre-service teachers and in-service teachers need to be prepared for to anticipate such a similar unexpected situation in the future. Additionally, there is also a need to listen to in-service teacher experiences during the emergency remote teaching and integrate the positive lessons that they have gained, such as the use of technology, into the current post pandemic face-to-face classroom instruction.
