BOOK EXCERPT:
"You can call this a confession if you must. Last year ... I murdered my husband. I did it with malice aforethought - a premeditated, cold blooded killing. No. On second thought, let's not call this a confession. A confession implies acknowledgement of guilt or remorse. I don't feel the least bit guilty and I certainly have no remorse. The bastard got what he deserved." With these words, Kat, a well-to-do suburban housewife with a flexible definition of morality, launches into her story. She has found ample evidence that her securities analyst husband, George, is cheating on her. But she has also discovered something else: George has squirreled away millions of dollars in secret accounts, violating every law in the SEC handbook. Claiming those assets in a divorce would alert authorities to George's crimes, and the resulting punitive fines might well wipe out their net worth. As Kat puts it, "The notion of George in prison was not so satisfying that I was willing to become poor."George's death becomes Kat's goal, and she carries out what she believes is the perfect murder with careful attention to detail. But she hasn't counted on a debonair district attorney with his eyes on higher political office, an aggressive SEC lawyer chafing because George died just as he was to be brought in for questioning, or an ambitious mistress with her own agenda.Funny, irreverent and introspective, Murder Imperfect traces Kat's tale through a roller coaster of financial shenanigans, ex-lovers and courtroom dramatics. If the essence of suspense is not, 'whodunit' but, rather 'will they get away with it?', Murder Imperfect will leave you guessing right to the very end.

BOOK EXCERPT:
A profound, compelling argument for abolition feminism—to protect criminalized survivors of gender-based violence, we must dismantle the carceral system. Since the 1970s, anti-violence advocates have worked to make the legal system more responsive to gender-based violence. But greater state intervention in cases of intimate partner violence, rape, sexual assault, and trafficking has led to the arrest, prosecution, conviction, and incarceration of victims, particularly women of color and trans and gender-nonconforming people. Imperfect Victims argues that only dismantling the system will bring that punishment to an end. Amplifying the voices of survivors, including her own clients, abolitionist law professor Leigh Goodmark deftly guides readers on a step-by-step journey through the criminalization of survival. Abolition feminism reveals the possibility of a just world beyond the carceral state, which is fundamentally unable to respond to, let alone remedy, harm. As Imperfect Victims shows, abolition feminism is the only politics and practice that can undo the indescribable damage inflicted on survivors by the very system purporting to protect them.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Criminal Law offers a unique hybrid approach to learning criminal law. Most textbooks oversimply the law by presenting the black letter law for major and defenses, but they rarely present any corresponding exploration of the gray areas that exist beyond the basic rules of law. Conversely, casebooks present numerous edited judicial opinions, often with context. Criminal Law takes the best from each of these approaches by merging textual pedagogy and case analyses into a coherent framework that includes legal history, social context, and public policy. Taking a historical approach, legal expert Henry F. Fradella presents the law as it evolved from English common law and compares it with the modern statutory approach to crimes set forth in the American Law Institute's highly influential Model Penal Code. After providing such comparative pedagogy for each crime or defense, Criminal Law presents 1-2 edited cases that allow the reader to contrast how the black letter law plays out in the real world. After each case, a series of questions challenge students to engage in critical thinking about the case and its implications as precedent. Finally, chapters contain a number of additional pedagogical features that focus on public policy concerns and statutory interpretation skills using penal laws from a variety of U.S. states.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Gideon Yaffe presents a ground-breaking work which demonstrates the importance of philosophy of action for the law. Many people are serving sentences not for completing crimes, but for trying to. So the law governing attempted crimes is of practical as well as theoretical importance. Questions arising in the adjudication of attempts intersect with questions in the philosophy of action, such as what intention a person must have, if any, and what a person must do, if anything, to be trying to act. Yaffe offers solutions to the difficult problems courts face in the adjudication of attempted crimes. He argues that the problems courts face admit of principled solution through reflection either on what it is to try to do something; or on what evidence is required for someone to be shown to have tried to do something; or on what sentence for an attempt is fair given the close relation between attempts and completions. The book argues that to try to do something is to be committed by one's intention to each of the components of success and to be guided by those commitments. Recognizing the implications of this simple and plausible position helps us to identify principled grounds on which the courts ought to distinguish between defendants charged with attempted crimes.

BOOK EXCERPT:
T. S. Eliot once spoke of a lifetime burning in every moment. He had the mind to conceive a perfect life, and he also had the honesty to admit he could not meet it. 'He was a man of extremes whose deep flaws and high virtues were interfused,' writes Lyndall Gordon in this perceptive and innovative biography of the great poet. She brilliantly explores his poetry, drama and essays in relationship to the four quite different women in his life and to his time in America and England. The Imperfect Life of T.S. Eliot follows the trials of a searcher whose flaws and doubts speak to all of us whose lives are imperfect.
