Published in 1814, this two-volume compilation covers chiefly Italian, German and British musicians of the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Scholar and composer Emil Naumann (1827-88) studied with Mendelssohn. This two-volume English translation of his best-known work was made by Ferdinand Praeger (1815-91) and published in 1888. Chapters on music in England have been added by its editor, the eminent Victorian musician Sir Frederick Gore Ouseley (1825-89).

This second comprehensive and scholarly volume of over 500 pages on the life and work of Andres Segovia contains a biography of the years 1958-1987 and focuses on Segovia's rendition of Spanish/Romantic and Contemporary/Neo-Classical masterpieces by Tárrega, Albeniz, Granados, Llobet and Ponce. A special appendix in each volume presents the original scores for the Segovia editions discussed in the text, some of which have never been published, as well as modern editions of these pieces. Musical biography has rarely been an object of theoretical and methodological reflection. Our present-day perception of the lives of prominent composers and performers of the past has been largely formed by cultural and political assumptions of nineteenth-century biographers and their twentieth-century followers. While older biographies are being scrutinized for veracity and 'updated' with new evidence, their historiographical premisses and narrative techniques remain largely unchallenged. The epistemological upheavals in the humanities since the 1960s have generated a body of theoretical thought that has undermined many of the assumptions of traditional biography. Consequently, many of these assumptions have lost their hold as viable underpinnings for present-day scholarly biography. For example, the accumulation of facts is no longer believed to bring us closer to an understanding of the subject; nor are the traditional views of the unified self and the self as a foundational idea taken for granted. This volume brings together musicologists and historians who explore, through individual case studies, the rich potential of these new theories for writing musical lives. The authors of this volume examine how the insights provided by these theories illuminate our critical reassessment of older biographies - and the interpretations of musical works these biographies were used to construe - and help forge new approaches to musical biography. The authors also explore the functions musical biographies served in different historical contexts, the relevance of biography for musical criticism, the reliability of archival evidence, the ethics of biography, the demands placed on biography by feminist and gender history, and the new possibilities offered by cinema. One such area is the classical music world; though, as Jan Bell Groh asserts in Evening the Score, inroads into this field have bene made, sometimes at great cost. In Petride’s time, most women musicians were forced to ply their trade in all-female orchestras; through the thirty-seven issues of Women in Music published from 1935 to 1940, the achievements of these musicians were championed, and the prejudices, misconceptions, and deliberately discriminatory policies of many of their male counterparts were exposed and condemned. Commentary on Skryabin has struggled to situate an understanding of the composer's music within his idiosyncratic philosophical world views. Early commentators' efforts to do so failed to establish a thorough or systematic approach. And later twentieth-century studies turned away from the composer's ideology, focusing instead on 'the music itself' with an analytic approach that scrutinized Skryabin's harmonic language in isolation from his philosophy. This groundbreaking study revisits the questions surrounding the composer's music within his own philosophy, but draws on new methodological tools, casting Skryabin's music in the light not only of his own philosophy of desire, but of more refined semiotic-psychoanalytical theory and modern techniques of music analysis. An interdisciplinary methodology corrects the narrow focus of Skryabin scholarship of the last century, offering insights from New Musicology and recent music theory that lead to hermeneutical, critically informed readings of selected works.

This second volume of Lilburn’s complete piano music comprises his experimental ‘Six Short Pieces’ (1962-63), his early Sonata for Piano in A Minor (1939) and the miniature Moths and Candles (1948). Adding to Lilburn’s collection of short pieces for piano, unfettered by the constraints of longer structures, Six Short Pieces shows the simple and sensuous motifs of Lilburn’s work coming together in precisely adjusted balance. Sonata for Piano in A Minor was written during the period of Lilburn’s tuition in London with Ralph Vaughan Williams. Grounded by a strong structural sense, the sonata combines the influence of the New Zealand landscape with romanticism, reflecting what Lilburn described as an ‘intense individual expression of emotion’. Subtitled ‘a dance for children’, Moths and Candles is a miniature work that was written for the documentary film Infant Schools. In this work, Lilburn simulates the tinkle of a musical box, the recurring tune rotating like a clockwork ballerina. This publication features music by one of New Zealand’s most renowned composers while he was studying with Ralph Vaughan Williams, revealing both Lilburn’s early influence and later style.
